Another Paradigm Shift!
When Steve Ballmer yelled at a departing Microsoft employee that he would “kill Google” we had no idea just how direct a method he had in mind. Buying all or part of AOL may be the first part of the master plan, as Google relies heavily on the advertising pages that come from Yahoo, since it now syndicates its search to Google.

One estimate suggested that Google would lose as much as $380m of advertising revenue if AOL dropped its search engine and took on MSNs. That would cut Google’s profit by something like 25 per cent, potentially giving its huge share price something of a tumble. No wonder Google is thought to be entering the bidding to partner with Time Warner on AOL instead of Microsoft.

However, the move by Microsoft could still potentially backfire, although with its cash mountain you would expect it to win the day. Google only chance is to paint a sufficiently rosy future picture to Time Warner’s management about what kind of outcome there would be for an AOL partnering Google, then perhaps a lot more than that $380m could be saved.

Buy Google's customers and terminate their business relationships with Google?  That's an interesting business strategy.

Though if the ad revenue generated by AOL is enough to hurt Google, it must also be large enough to help MSN Search's revenue stream.  If MSN were to absorb AOL's customers, it would make sense to switch their default search off Google search and onto MSN Search.

AOL could also play the two off each other and get a better deal on either's services.
The absorption of AOL into MSN makes a lot of sense because of their service similarities

What similarities?

AOL is a fully fledeged ISP, they get their income from subscription customers.

MSN just provides web-based services, they get their income from 3rd party advertisements and Microsoft subsidies.

There isn't much overlap between AOL and MSN really.

My bad.

Well, actually... here in the UK, MSN are just a reseller for BT's services.

But nevermind, I was wrong Smiley

Thanks Adam. I was just about to point out the list of services MSN provides. Plus I'm a MSN customer since '95 Microsoft Network (that's what it was known for). They began providing Dial-Up access just like AOL, CompuServe, Erol's, among others. However, AOL has been around for much longer and some of those mentioned above no longer exist today.

The article suggests Google could be a good partner for TW because of the infrastructure Google is building.  I don't buy that.  As far as I am aware, Time Warner Cable is the 2nd biggest cable co in the US(behind Comcast?).  Why would they even need Google's infrastructure?

A spun-off merged AOL/MSN would be great for everyone, I reckon.  It would allow them to "act like a startup", able to push forward technologies and be able to take more risks than your average startup (because they are being bankrolled by MS and TW).

And hopefully, it means I can dump ICQ for those few friends who haven't moved over to MSN Messenger yet!
