Orginally thought to be on MSDN for download on October 14th, the release supposedly got slipped because the final RC build failed a regression test. Many developers are hopeful that it will be released weeks before the official marketing launch to get a head start on coding. Note that this information is straight from the mouth from the VP of Development on Visual Studio 2005. SQL Server 2005 will release at the same time as well from what we understand.

It's also been rumored that many of the developers who worked on creating Visual Studio 2005 have already moved on to other projects, including a Service Pack 1 for VS 2005 due out by late 2006. There is also a lot of talk surrounding another version of the .NET Framework to be released around the Vista timeframe with a version of 2.1, killing the chance of the next Visual Studio codenamed "Orca" being released at that time.

Note that Visual Studio Team System 2005 and BizTalk 2006 will be out in Q1 of 2006.

http://bink.nu/Article5114.bink

I've been hearing that tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest.

<evnet:views>0</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/126000/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Rumors have been flying everywhere that Microsoft's Visual Studio 2005 will be RTM (Released to Manufacturing) and on MSDN in a matter of days. It makes it very hard to work out what the real story is when people pass on information about delays but won't be drawn on any kind of expected date.

Personally, I'm kind of resigned to missing the deadline now and just getting on with my project using VS2003, worrying about VS2005 after Christmas when a ton of new books will start to appear and the inevitable teething problems will at least have been documented.

If it's not on MSDN before November 7th I'm going to have to eat a large piece of humble pie and apologise to "Rumourbuster Rob" the admin on longhornblogs, who's posted MANY blog entries complaining about lack of professionalism or basic journalism on other people's blogs and who seemed to have been hoist by his own petard with his proclamations that stories of VS2005 appearing on MSDN before Nobember 7th were "false rumours". It is now starting to look like he may be proved right, for reasons that seem to change from one day to the next, varying according to which Microsoft person you speak to. :(

<evnet:views>0</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/124080/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Zeo wrote:I've heard mixed messages all over the place.Tell me about it!We went back to Microsoft about the "one or two weeks delay because of a SQL Server problem" trying to get more concrete information but nobody's prepared to commit to a specific date for MSDN Universal availability. The blogs…</evnet:previewtext>

<trackback:ping>http://channel9.msdn.com/124080/Trackback.aspx</trackback:ping>

Re: VS2005 RTM on MSDN 14th October!

You can write production code, you just can't release production code. It turns out that I'd ordered so many "Pessimism" awards and "Pessimism mugs" (they're goblets with a marker half way up and the slogan "This mug is half empty" alongside it) for my dev team I was considered one of their best customers! I've always taken the attitude "hope for the best but expect the worst" because I've got burnt way too often by the nascent optimism of developers and project managers that invariably screw up expectations, costs and delivery dates.

That being said, nihilism will doom a project before it's gotten off the ground, so being pessimistic all the time is NOT a solution to the problem.

When I left a client I'd contracted at for four years the head of architecture there said he would miss my "unique approach of approaching each project with a sense of gloomy optimism" (although "happy pessimism" would probably fit just as well) which probably best describes the whole pessimism/optimism thing! The trick is to be optimistic and encouraging with your team members whilst making it clear to management when they are being blinded by their own hype and ridiculously over-the-top optimism.

As for VS2005 it's a bit more personal than that. I've just started a new project for a client as "technical lead". It involves taking a large amount of existing framework code and adapting it for delivery of a new product for one of their clients around Christmas time, with a hidden objective of refactoring the code where possible to better position it for the future. I've fought quite hard for this to be the client's first VS2005 web project. There is, as you'd expect, considerable opposition, because it's seen as high risk. Fortunately, the CTO supports the use of VS2005 (although the CEO and BAs regard it as too high risk) and basically I think I've won agreement that I can have "one day" to get the code up and running ready for regression testing.

There is a LOT of code and a lot of changes to sort out and I've basically agreed that that "one day" will be a Friday or a Monday (which gives me a weekend in addition, albeit in my own time). The timescales really needed that "one day" to be this Monday!

The delay screws me somewhat in that it messes some very tight deadlines up and next weekend isn't a lot of use to me as I am away at the Developer Developer Developer day (early start to drive to Reading, late return after the geek dinner) so effectively I'm going to have a rather shortened Sunday to try and get up and running, assuming that VS2005 is not only uploaded but downloadable over my rather poor 512MB broadband connection before next weekend(assuming I can have it all downloaded by the Friday evening).

Truth is that if it doesn't get released in its RTM version before next weekend I'm not going to be doing any "real" work with VS2005 until next year. Hence the extreme interest in it being available early.
<evnet:views>0</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/123659/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>I once got contacted by despair.com asking me if I'd talk to the Wall Street Journal for an article they were writing about the new "pessimism" approach in the business world.
