say what!?
Scoble / Microsoft ask:  Which one?

"    1 – We use a variation of the gleam to convey that feeds are updatable.

2 – The ring illustrates movement around a feed.

3 – This is a spark to show new information being broadcasted.

4 – We use waves to show broadcasting of content.

5 – This is the Beta 1 icon with our new requirements.

personally - i dont really like any of them - especially 5 ( the clown nose turban) * btw 5 seems to be geting alot of votes on both sites above.

I think id bring back Channels - and call them that. Not web feeds (mooo!)  Web Channels - or just Channels.  After all - adam bosworth wrote Channel Definition Format in XML - all those years ago - so by going back to channel icon - you go right back to being FIRST - instead of this copying the RSS/orange icon - but without the RSS etc.  Doesnt make sence.

 Subscribe to channel?  OK

I prefer 4 and 5 out of all of them, but would err towards 4 because 5 looks more like an explosion than anything else.

But I think it's impossible to come up with anything that everyone will be happy with.
Dislike them all..... But I dislike 4 the least...
I agree with Manip, i don't really like any of them, but 4 is the best of a bad bunch

I agree.

Take #3 but instead of 2 pulses on each side, make it 3, and make them a little bolder.

That would be perfect then.

#3.

I think broadcasting is a bit too extreme in the other icons.  And the star in the middle looks like something can be added (#1 however would have been too general).

#3 for Text
#4 for Podcasting

I like that idea....Scoble/Adam/Charles/Marc/Sampy/etc...have any input on that? Wanna pin this thread  too for us who wont be participating in the Halloween contest? (Sorry I have no use for the software being awarded Sad)

I like #3 the best. But I also think that only #3 and #4 will look good as small icons.

I would just say #4 because it looks similar to the FF one. It would be nice to have an RSS icon that was similar across all browsers not just an "IE" one.

why not hold a competition and let the C9 users make one?

Just give us the constraints (size, pixels, colors) you want and you guys can chose.

edit: personally i like number 3, if you include some hdr effects like making it pulse from the middle outward then it would be awsome++

Now, right, stop me if I'm being moronic, but exactly why don't they just use a little orange box with RSS in it, like RSS symbols are on pages?  If you want to possibly suggest its a subscribe, have a add symbol in one corner.  If there are multiple types of subscription, add a drop down box when you click the button.

Because IE7 supports RSS, Atom, and a few other feed formats. Along with the ability to support new feed formats as they come out.

Hence why they're not using the "RSS" label on the button as they did on the earlier IE7 internal releases we saw demo'd for the first time on here a few months ago.

Its still makes sense to use the same icons as the button on the page.  Otherwise, what does the icon on the page represent?  At the moment, the argument appears to me to be akin to saying "we can't use that icon of a page with writing on for Word because in Word the page might include some images as well and therefore that icon doesn't accurately represent Word".

Also, this whole using XML in an orange box thing is doing nothing but damage.
There are 3 arguments against an orange button containing RSS:

1) The average man on the street doesn't and shouldn't have to know what RSS is.

2) RSS isn't very accurate when the feed can be ATOM or some future format, better to have a generic image.

3) If you're language isn't based on the Latin alphabet (Arabic, Chinese etc) text will be meaningless or will involve additional unnecessary localisation.

Plus, how do you put "Traditional Chinese" characters in a 16x16 space? Wink

Also, images are more pleasing than plain text in most cases.

Bullets change governments far surer than votes.
I vote 'none of the above.' I read someones blog today, can't remember who or where now, but they suggested the taking the RSS icon above with the spark in it and modifying it. Essentially, you get two RSS icons, one with a plus sign replacing the spark, and one with a minus sign replacing the spark, which signifies adding and removing a feed. I think that'd be the way to go. Also, the modified version apparently scales better.

Ah, I remember "PointCast". It was fun for a while. Amazing when it first came out.
