Hey all! It's been a while since I've posted a thread...

I'm looking for a solution for a built-in computer/tabletpc/laptop/whatever that would go inside a wall (about 10mm deep).

It's for my mom.

She wants it to be sort of MCEish (being able to watch tv, etc) and browse the internet (getting recipes, etc).

What would be a good (cheap) solution in terms of hardware?

Put the tv in the wall.

Wireless keyboard and remote.

Small device.

Browse the web and it's a DMR.

I installed this in my kitchen.

Works great.

It needs to be more of a regular computer, not something with a defined interface.

Awhile ago I was surfing around for such solutions, and I had actually come across a couple, one of which I believe was carried by Walmart at their online store.

Doing some quick googling I can't turn up the specific device I remember, but did find a couple links that might interest you:

Also, you might take a look at MP3Car.com and some of the solutions for in-car pcs, because you might be able to adapt some of the technology for an in-wall solution (touchscreen, micro-atx box you might hide under or in a cabinet, etc.).

You'll have to think about cooling, and maybe using an adequate surround/casing type of thing to keep heat away from the wall interior so you don't start a fire. Some sort of heavy plastic or aramid box insert maybe.

You might go back through the C9 videos and find the one about the Microsoft Digital Home in the UK. They had a neat setup and used this thing that turned the countertop into a speaker.

Hi, I realize it's been a while since the original post but the perfect kitchen computer is at hand. The Always Innovating Touch Book, http://alwaysinnovating.com/home/index.htm. It's small with an 8.9 inch screen. It's fanless - don't have to worry about cooling. It's only about 1 1/2 inches deep and can be easily mounted in the wall or under a kitchen cabinet with an LCD under cabinet mount with swivel. If you want you can even mount it directly on the refrigerator - it's backplate is magnetized.It runs linux and can serve up web browsing and 720p video.

Best of all, it's only $299 without keyboard. This is the best way to go in the kitchen and should be available early this sumnmer.

Think what is wanted is a small touchscreen computer built for wall installation, that connects to Windows Home Server, or a Linux variant...or something like that....
