My mod color is red
For those GotDotNetters who don't read Korby Parnell's blog (shame on you!), they're throwing a party at the Microsoft Museum this Friday night. So if you're in the Seattle area and you already have a GotDotNet account (yeah, they're checking, no signing up just for the party!), come on by for beer and... cake... ??!

I'll be there, assuming that our release-to-web goes smoothly that day Smiley

Can you imagine if the party is anything like the web site?

There'll be a long queue at the bar with a 10-15 minute delay between each person being served. Either that or a message on the bar saying the staff are on a break and will be back in half an hour (a notice that is still there half an hour later).

There'll be a host who's supposed to tell everyone what's happening, but who doesn't show up, leaving everyone at the party asking each other what's happening.

There'll... well anybody who's tried to use GotDotNet after the initial "Microsoft launch yet another community initiative and then quickly move onto something else once the initial furour is over" period will know what I'm talking about.

Hopefully the party means that GotDotNet is about to get another revival and actually start to deliver on its initial promise.

Fingers crossed!
Gotdotnet arrived before its time. Admittedly, it took us way too long to convince management of its intense and focused value for our customers and to secure a budget befitting its importance. However, I truly believe that we have now done so.

I am a true believer. I drank the frickin' Gotdotnet kool aid. Like you, I suspect, I saw the value of the site from day one. When I joined the team earlier this year, I dedicated my life to articulating its customer value internally and planning for the future.

The Gotdotnet Revival has indeed begun!

As with most things in life, progress is not always apparent immediately. You have my personal guarantee that things ware changing for the better on Gotdotnet.
For the first time in 3-4 years, the site is well-funded, well-staffed, and passionately supported by a dedicated and talented team. We have been having a few minor issues with our last deployment, which was a BIG one. In that deployment we:

0. Deployed new frontline Web Servers and 64 bit Yukon SQL Server boxes on the backend.
1. Upgraded to ASP.NET 2.0
2. Implemented a new cross site search (built on MSN Search, of course).
3. Deployed significant fixes and feature enhancements for CodeGallery, which we launched on Aug22.

We are currently working on ironing out some post-deployment issues (session state...fun) and we think that a fix is in the works. When these issues are resolved, check out Gotdotnet. You may not be completely impressed but I'm betting you'll be partially so. Fingers crossed!

Hope you can make it to the Party!

BTW, we're taking Gotdotnet down for a bit this morning to deploy a set of fixes.

I was just thinking, "Great people will show up and half of them will have to wait outside and cycle in and out of the party. Then sometimes when you try to go back into the party, you'll have to check in again. Other times you'll just find a sign on the door that says 'Sorry, the party is undergoing maintinence right now. Check back in a few minutes'. Sometimes you'll be told to leave in the middle of a conversation." Wink

Oh, and some of the cool people will say, "Screw this, I'm going to the Sourceforge party."

Friday's the opening day of Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire. I was a long time GDN user, probably since 2001 or earlier, but I'm not flying out there for free beer on friday. I got my movie tix in advance. I would have liked to meet that proctor guy, but not over seeing the new potter movie.

Harry Potter blows, I'll take the free beer.  Who would rather go to the movies to see a bunch of boys casting spells running around then have free beer? The only thingb that would be even remotely interesting is if his girlfriend has come of age and started developing.

Actually, there's a real Eliza Doolittle moment in the Goblet of Fire.
