I can't say I'm much of a gamer myself. However, at the local cinema today was a large room filled with about 50 XBOX 360. I got a good 30 mins playing on them and I am amazed by the graphics and the overall gaming experience.

Has anyone else tryed one out?

I played a whole host of games, NBA, Call Of Duty, Gun, King Kong, Burnout (I think?), some football game and Perfect Zero (I think?).

Wow. Well done Microsoft.

I know how I'm spending my saturday. Wink
I played Call of Duty 2 for about 10 minutes at a kiosk. The graphics of CoD2 on the 360 were definitely not as good as Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube. When will we see games with better graphics on the 360?

I played a demo model on Tuesday. About 20 Minutes with Hexic, and 10 or so on the demo of Kameo: Elements of power. The graphics are stunningly good, but are, a lot better than I can manage on my PC, and I really like the UI Blades.
I've never had a console before, but I think I might be tempted this time around, particularly for the media center integration, and casual gaming made easy.

I reckon it won't be long before we finally get a fully working XBox (original) emulator/virtualiser for the PC. Emulating the XBox 360 will be much harder though, but I reckon we'll see an XBox 360 emulator in the next 6 years (PSX emulators started coming out in 1999, 3-4 years after the PSX first came out)

When PS3 is released, it's going to look like v2.5

I know 360's going to look better for a little while, and I'm prepared to overlook that for a few months.

Bwahaha!

How are you oging to play pre rendered movies? I forgot.

Xbox 360 isn't going to be like what, Playstation 1 was when it first came out.

Your not going to completely blow your mind with the graphics, when you see it....the graphics are good, but nothing you haven't seen before on the PC.

It's the framerate that's pretty impressive for these high-res games, the gameplay is very smooth. You can really enjoy playing games now, you'll really feel the speed of the action now.

That's when I really enjoy games, when you can feel the speed of the action; fast paced action.

Xbox 360 will give you that.

Live with 360 will be awesome!

I read somewhere that there are some really bad problems with the kiosks. Microsoft contracted with kiosk company for them, and most of them were royally screwed up. Everything from non HD TV's to bad ventilation and heat crashing the hardware.

Also, I wouldn't expect the full capabilities of the console to be used until the next wave of games. That's usually what has happened in the past, anyway.

Sony has built a great rep.

And so far they have done nothing to tarnish it.

A lot people will see no reason to leave sony.

Xbox Live would be the only reason I can think of.

But Sony will probably address that soon.

Emulation lacks many elements of the real console. The controller (unless you get a 3rd party USB knockoff, if they make one), XBox Live, playing the game while it's still new, and it's also illegal. As far as know, all those claims of "it's legal if you only keep it for 24 hours" or "it's legal if you own the game" or "it's legal if they don't sell the game anymore" are just attempts to legitimize an illegal activity. This is why all those PC-based PSX clones from the late 90's got killed. Connectix (makers of Virtual PC, now owned by MSFT) sold a PSX emulator briefly before Sony stopped them.
I wonder if it will have a root kit as standard.

I think that's why alot of people don't want it. You KNOW Sony is going to blow your mind with the PS3. They did with the PS1, PS2 and the PSP recently.

For that price, I expect to be impressed.

Hahaha!  Tool.  Tool tool tool tool!
The PSP isn't really all that great.  The DS is kicking its rear end.

Nope, there will be no unified online service.  Sony has confirmed this.  It will be per game.  So, no useful buddy lists or anything.

Well you don't need to get a "third party usb knock off" for the Xbox 360 controller. Microsoft are selling an official one that is PC Compatible already.

A controller that you can use on your XBox or PC is a good idea. I remember hearing that the original XBox controller connector is just a USB with some proprietary connector so you can't hook it up to your PC, which seemed to be a really stupid idea. Glad to see they're coming around. Smiley I can see them releasing their XBox 360 to PC ports with some sort of joystick profile so it plays the same on the PC as it does on the XBox.

Don't even bother with Beer and the xbox, his reasoning. It comes from "evil Micro$oft" so it must be crap.

But on the other hand he is loving Sony, the guys who are putting rootkits on cd's, love lockin formats. And all that nice shabang. Are great liars(heck he was still beliving the killzone 2 trailer was real a couple of weeks ago, did he also think the PS2 techdemos were real aswell?) so it's obvious what his opinion is going to be when it comes to Microsoft.

One can only hope that it will suck less than Sony's Connect.

In the meantime, there's Xbox Live.

Let me be more specific, Sony has built a great rep......in Gaming!

Even without a service like Xbox Live, the games for the Sony console are just far superior to Xbox; so most people will still look to buy Sony.

The only rep. that Xbox has going for it is Halo and some games by RARE.

Xbox still has a lot of ground to cover to catch up to Sony in this respect.

Agreed - I haven't heard of any launch title using more than one of the three CPUs for game logic.

Early on in a console lifecycle, the games companies are trying to get games out there as quick as they can. Later on, they have learnt many more tricks about the console, and can really start pushing the hardware to its limits. The classic example is Halo 1 vs Halo 2: exactly the same hardware, same group of programmers, same game theme, but Halo 2 does things they probably never even dreamed of when they were making Halo 1 Smiley

Just like Halo 1 "defined" the Xbox on first release, there'll be a bunch of "gotta have" titles out of the launch bunch. And then when the second wave hits, with games that use all three CPUs at once, there'll be a whole bunch more!

What is the obsession with graphics? It seems that is the focus of games now. Plus you only get the best graphics with HDTV's - so only those with a lot of disposable income will benefit. What is good about HD if many play their games on a portable TV in there bedroom?

I would rather have a game that did not have the best graphics that gave hours of gameplay time than one with amazing graphics that you got bored with in less than an hour.

That is what Nintendo's gamble is - offer a better gameplay experience. Make a console for games, not all-in-one media experience. For that you have a PC. It is better to do one or two things really well than be average at lots of things. The Revolution will be a lot cheaper and appeal to the traditional non/casual gamers, and thus may get more sales.

It would be better if people bought consoles for the games, rather than the specification of the thin. Unfortunately I think marketing makes people buy consoles, not common sense.

The DS has no competition at the moment (not the PSP as that is more expensive (UMD's are unjustifiably more expensive than DVD's), cannot do the same things and is more like a portable media player that does games) and may not for a while (as I am sure Nintendo have a patent of their DS technology).

PS1 didn’t really blow my mind, it was kind of ok, but I stuck with the N64 when it came out. And the PS2 certainly didn’t blow my mind, on every account I found the Xbox to be much better.

And in addition, due to the lack of a public apology in the rootkit ordeal I am boycotting all Sony products.

My name is Dave Oliver. I'm a Technical Architect.
I've got a PS2, Xbox and Gamecube.

I am a hard-a*sed Gamer Geek and proud of it!

I have to be 100% totally honest with you. I will be getting an Xbox 360, it's on order and I no doubt will get an PS3 as well.

Why I bother with Games Consoles I do not know!

... because I always end up playing my PC more, even the PC versions of games I have on my consoles I end up playing more.

Admittedly, I always keep my PC up to date (I set my expectation with my wife that I would refresh my PC every 18 months)

After all this time the PC still has it for me ... so Microsoft this is my message to you ...

DO NOT STOP INVESTING IN PC GAMING BECAUSE YOU HAVE THE XBOX!

Because as history has already proved in the past, the wheel will turn again and the PC will be the Gamers tool of choice, why, because it doesn't date and people like me will continue to invest so it doesn't.

Early Xbox reviews: so-so

Expensive, not high standard launch titles (i.e no must have games).

Is it just me, or is there far too many game sequels (same old games, graphics update, minimal gameplay enhancement)? But then there must be people who buy them, otherwise you wouldn't get so many.

That is what happens when so few game companies are left in the market and don't want to take any "risks" on original content (see music/movie industries).

Consoles, being closed platforms only work to help create a monopoly.

How easy is it for a small game company to create an X-Box game today? How much does it cost?
