The few games I"ve seen are pretty boring.. Mostly like all the ones I would see when I installed Red Hat... What was it Tux racer, so something.. The Asteroids rip off game.. Yawn...

Are there any *good* spare-time games out there? Any that dazzle me with graphics, cool gameplay, or have such a unique concept that you can overlook those other two items?

And indie devs could sell their games as PS3 cell compiled binary CD's on the web and finally make more cash.
And why would Sony want you to route around their licensing system? Every other development house pays Sony for publishing games on the PS3, except the indies? Doesn't make sense.

As for sony taking a loss because of linux enabled PS3's again, I think you're wrong. You don't lose anything by ADDING functionality to a device.

This is not about insulting developers, but just some hometruths.

I pointed out some of the reasons why a no-budget developer-based community is not the best setup for producing games, and why that will mean the games are really only targetted towards that market.  Furthermore, have a look at ALL of the "homebrew" games that have been made to date.  I haven't seen any that are better than even a mediocre retail game.  Even if you take a game that is more developer suited and doesn't require much in the way of art such as FreeCiv, look at the poor quality of that game, and how it rips off a game that came out in 1991, for goodness sakes.

The problem is pretty simple.  These days, making a homebrew computer game to compete in a market of these professional quality games, is about the same as trying to pitch your camcorder home movie against a £100 million Spielberg movie.  It wont work and the only people who are interested are those who are also into the "camcorder movie community" (or whatever).

As for your comment that Sony can't lose by adding Linux, oh they can.  When you buy an X-Box 360 or PS3 in the shops (and I will probably end up buying both), that is not the price of the hardware.  The price of the hardware is much higher but the play that both Sony and Microsoft are making is that it is a "loss leader".  Look it up...

So, will you get people who buy a PS3 but don't buy games for it.  Of course.  Let me quote such a person:  "I'm going to buy 2 of them(PS3). 1 for l33t hacks, and one to use according to the directions"

Oh.

So Beer, why didn't that happen with the PS2 Linux kit, that was also arguably a lot easier to develop for?

Where is this thriving homebrew games community on the PS2? Why do you expect the sitation to change with the PS3?
Yeah, sony are just gonna let you start selling PS3 games to people.

Yup, you keep thinking that.

By the way, Alien Hominid has nothing to do with all the stuff that you're saying here. It was developed using the console manufacturer's tools, it's being distributed by publishers that have the console manufacturer's right to distribute games, etc etc

The only thing different is that they started from scratch and then shopped the game around. But that happens for a lot of other games, like Serious Sam, etc.

If they had to use the PS2 linux kit to release a linux game, they wouldn't be able to distribute it via a publisher.

Remember, Beer believes the moon landings were faked.

If you believe that, you can believe pretty much anything.

Beer, all your fantastic (and I use the term in its original meaning) theories are based on a set of unproved conjectures. Let's take them one at a time, please answer to these questions and don't try to change the subject:

1. what makes you think that there will be an OS on the HD?
