I strongly disagree with you cider. You are insulting all the developers that make games in their spare time.
As for sony taking a loss because of linux enabled PS3's again, I think you're wrong. You don't lose anything by ADDING functionality to a device.
This is not about insulting developers, but just some hometruths.
I pointed out some of the reasons why a no-budget developer-based community is not the best setup for producing games, and why that will mean the games are really only targetted towards that market. Furthermore, have a look at ALL of the "homebrew" games that have been made to date. I haven't seen any that are better than even a mediocre retail game. Even if you take a game that is more developer suited and doesn't require much in the way of art such as FreeCiv, look at the poor quality of that game, and how it rips off a game that came out in 1991, for goodness sakes.
The problem is pretty simple. These days, making a homebrew computer game to compete in a market of these professional quality games, is about the same as trying to pitch your camcorder home movie against a £100 million Spielberg movie. It wont work and the only people who are interested are those who are also into the "camcorder movie community" (or whatever).
As for your comment that Sony can't lose by adding Linux, oh they can. When you buy an X-Box 360 or PS3 in the shops (and I will probably end up buying both), that is not the price of the hardware. The price of the hardware is much higher but the play that both Sony and Microsoft are making is that it is a "loss leader". Look it up...
So, will you get people who buy a PS3 but don't buy games for it. Of course. Let me quote such a person: "I'm going to buy 2 of them(PS3). 1 for l33t hacks, and one to use according to the directions"
Oh.
