I just posted "MyHeritage Face Recognition" about a site that released a face recognition beta, powered by Cognitec.  Apologies if you've seen it before.

I misused it liberally with an attempt to match my photo and Scoble's stock photo with their celebrity database.  Results are interesting. Tongue Out

That photo of you makes you look younger than your avatar.

I'm pondering posting mine... I don't look too good tonight Smiley
This face recognition thing doesn't work for (I need to watch my language). I've uploaded 2 celebritys' photo - both are big with the celebrities' face occupying 70% of the photo and is faced forward. Yet it returned ridiculous results.James
I tried three photos; first, my regular avatar picture that I've been using for over a year: this one came up as Jostein Gaarder (61%). I had to go to result number five before I got someone whose name I recognised: Alec Baldwin (48%).

But I don't look like that any more. Recently I shaved my beard off. I tried a new photo - taken using the Scott Hanselman technique of self-portraiture. This time it reckons I look like chess player Nigel Short - but for some reason the automatic detection has cut my ear off! Manually marking my face just gives a stronger result, 70% vs 68%. I'm quite pleased with #2 though, Kenneth Branagh (69%). #3 is Rita Hayworth, though, so make of that what you will.

Finally I tried a really old shot, which is very low resolution. This time it got really confused and decided I was female - Kirsten Dunst, Monserrat Caballe, Nicole Kidman, then David Bowie (47%). I don't think I look that androgynous.

I'm thinking of replacing my avatar with this horrid photo of myself taken earlier today.

I ran it through the matching program, it didn't find any matches, not even after 4 attempts and two different photos.

Well, at least no-one can say I look like a celebrity.

I apparently look like: Winona Ryder (57%), Sarah Michelle Gellar, George Clooney, Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin, Shania Twain, Frank Zappa, Emiliano Zapata, John Travolta, Harry Belafonte, Annette Benning.

I get mistaken for Winona all the time.  Expressionless

Couple of attempts:

Leonardo DiCaprio, JK Rowling

Tennessee Williams, Asia Argento, Celine Dion, Halle Berry

Leonardo DiCaprio, Kimi Raikkonen, JK Rowling, Bono

So it needs more work.
So far we've seen that this doesn't really work all that well with (presumably) high-resolution digital pictures taken under good lighting in good conditions.

How well do you think automatic facial recognition systems work for images captured from CCTV? Or in biometric identification systems? On this evidence my confidence (low to begin with) has dropped to almost zero.

Now now, this is a web-based service that probably isn't using the same recognition algorithms as the MoD's Qinetiq systems, I think the fact it recognises faces in under a second is a feat in itself.

Quote from Cognitec's website:

"Cognitec Systems develops and markets the well-established and world-leading FaceVACS® face recognition software. Cognitec's software experts have been developing face recognition technology since 1995. In various independent evaluation tests including the Face Recognition Vendor Test 2002, FaceVACS® has proven to be the leading technology available on the market."

Yikes, I don't want to know what the others were like Expressionless
