In the first Superman movie with Christopher Reeve, he reversed the rotation of the Earth... which, of course, causes time to go backwards... this had the nice side effect that all the water rushed back up the river into Lake Mead, and Hoover Dam fixed itself

Ah, the combination of high suspension-of-disbelief and cheap special effects...
I gave this a lot of thought.... (what can I say, I have lots of free time). In fact, I proposed that Superman did NOT reverse the earth's rotation thereby, reverse time itself.
In fact, what Superman did was to fly faster than the speed of light. We know that c is the theoretical maximum speed of light, anything that goes faster than c, will travel back in time.
So, what he did was to fly really really fast -- so since he wanted to end back in the same place after enough time reversal, he flew in a circle. When we see the earth reverse its rotation, we (the camera) are really going back in time with Superman. From our point of view, water can flow up Hoover dam, and Louis' car can un-fall from the fissure.
So, no high suspension of disbelief needed. Now, anyone wants to know why Peter Parker's reluctant to leave Aunt May is a physical manifestation of his Oedipus complex?
