Life is beautiful :)
Most of us must have used powerpoint presentations and i agree its a matter of taste as to which is good and how a presentation must be.
today i came across an interesting comparison of the presentation done by Bill gates during his announcement of Windows Live and other presentations and those done by Steve Jobs at the Zen aesthetic .  take a look at these pictures
Steve jobs Presentation
Bill Gates Presentation

for the same discussion i found the comments here better http://writersblocklive.com/?p=47

I feel Steve Jobs is better at this and Less is more in this case .so which is better in your view and how do you present your presentations ?

Too often, PowerPoint is used as a crutch for the presenter, rather than to provide information to the audience.

As Edward Tufte says [second link], PowerPoint makes you stupid.

Live for nothing, or die for everything
Naw, I like Bills style because he gives information. Bill will stay on a slide and trail off in his own CSA self without getting too vauge. Whereas Steve will brag and brag and not give any data what-so-ever....so screw Steve and his turtleneck too

The presentation behind bill gates is way too distracting, but the question is where the audience has its focus on.

If it is Bill Gates speaking, and it is your first time attending the presentation, you might even not really read any of the slides, because your focus is on this amazing person. If it is your 2nd time, you might already giving away more focus to the fancy slides. Which means you won't focus on the body language, voice tone aka the story he is telling.

You are trying to figure out the story by looking at the slides, while he is talking. You are not consuming his story, but are probaly without knowing it creating your own story, making relations on the slides that might be incorrect, etc.

The presentation of gates has enough text if only digital lifestyle and digital workstation are on the slide. He can just tell you in a story way 'digital life' style is memory, education, etc.

There is also a good book about this, which might come in handly if his assistent read it. Beyond Bullet Points from MSPress gives you the steps to a more movie like presenation, where the user experiences a story.
Judging by the artwork of that slide behind Billy G I would think he was giving a presentation to a bunch of preschoolers.
I can't dig up a good photo on the 'net, but your post reminds me of the scene in Pirates of Silicon Valley, where Steve Jobs is a tiny figure on stage with a giant Bill Gates towering down over him via satellite.
