Does anybody see any similarities between Netscape 8 and Office 2007?
People still use Netscape?!? Sorry, had to be said.  Where are some screenshots for Netscape 8? I haven't used that since version 6, which ran like a tortoise.

Sorry but if you mean this as 'microsoft stole netscapes layout', i need to reply as 'you got to be kidding'.

I don't see it as stealing even if they did take the idea from netscape, I see it as bringing a effecient technology into a product that needs it.

It reminds me of Mac Users saying wow vista stole our search icon.
I mean come on, how many different ways can you make a magnifing glass look.
And hey if it looks good might as well use it.

Another example is Mac Users saying yep Vista also stole our idea for integrated indexed searching.
Every OS needs this, its a step to build the next generation OS.
It's like saying whoah someone stole my idea for a monitor! - How else can you bring a effecient and cost effective graphical display to the user.

You see where i'm heading...
That's starting to look very nice indeed, especially now that they have sorted out the top left corner of the window and gotten rid of the silver. The whole lot looks nicely integrated with each other.

Makes me wonder how many other programs will start to emulate O12 (at least to some degree), especially MS programs such as IE.

The interface works for Netscape but that is an UGLY Office interface.  The original looked very well, looked rather cool.  This looks like, should I be nice?  No, it looks like hell. I would be embarrassed to even show this in public.
thx god, they are not idiots:-)
the blue is ugly, but this is FANTASTIC!!!

The Black does look better, that looks much better that blue doesnt work.  The more I looked at that blue the more pissed off I got.  So unless you guys want me pulling a Ballmer and throwing chairs left and right, ditch the blue.

The black theme is from Jensen Harris' supplemental collection of screenshots.

I'm really impressed. They've done a great job polishing the interface these last few months. Now we just have to see how this looks with glass.

The top left corner bugs me, it's totally out of place. Expressionless
re - the left circle button.  ...like the one that controls windows (round start button) so they are doing the same in office

i think that is the nicest looking application i have ever seen
good work ms!
God that blue just pisses me off, it reminds me of the early days of longhorn.

This is looking pretty good.  Kudos, Office Team.

It might be the first good Office upgrade since '97 Smiley

Once again the Office team eschews the Windows usability and UI consistency guidelines.

As I've said before, I'm all for the new "strip" UI concept, but why do they have to client-paint the window borders and titlebars? Why can't they make the program stick to the "look and feel" of the host OS? Office 2007 is going to look UGLEH on Windows XP in "Classic" mode.

I prefer the beta 1 theme to this. And god, that dumbass Office button.

1. You'll survive
2. Because they're trying to get away from WindowsXP Service Pack 11 ideology
3. What are you still doing running XP? There is this thing called Vista...

Question about Outlook/Word 2007:

...do they still support plaintext emails?

I HATE/DETEST/ABHORR "HTML Emails", I think they're one of the biggest evils in IT today, so why does Microsoft keep on encouraging it? What is the real-world benefit of HTML email?

Yes it does. And it seems to properly quote HTML emails in plaintext.

Does it finally support Usenet-style quotations too?

Beta-1 Technical Release Build Coming Next Week

Preparing to Install 2007 Microsoft Office System Products, Beta1TR build
We are busy making final preparations for the 2007 Microsoft Office Beta 1 Technical Refresh (Beta1TR) release. We plan to release this to you on BetaPlace (http://beta.microsoft.com) next week and appreciate your patience as we polish things off.

We have two goals for this release:

  1. We want you to be able to validate that the fixes to issues you've previously reported about 2007 Microsoft Office do meet your needs.

  2. We also want to provide a build of 2007 Microsoft Office that functions on Windows Vista Feb CTP. With this build, we will begin accepting bug and newsgroup submissions regarding the 2007 Microsoft Office Beta1TR build on Windows Vista Feb. CTP.

The Beta1TR build remains suitable for testing. However, the quality bar has not been raised to the higher level that would be expected for a Beta-2 release. Therefore, there may be some areas of the product that function more effectively than before and others areas that display new bugs or problems. Please continue to log bugs in BetaPlace and use the newsgroups for product support.

Beta1TR E-mail to Expect from Microsoft
When we release the Beta1TR build next week, you will receive an e-mail from betamail@microsoft.com which contains the product identification keys (PIDs) needed for installing the new 2007 Microsoft Office system build. These product keys are the same PIDs you received previously and which you used to install the current (11/2005) Beta-1 build. The expiration date of the PIDs has been extended to July 31, 2006.

Beta1TR System Requirements
We have not yet set final 2007 Microsoft Office system requirements. We will provide full system guidelines on the Product Downloads page of the 2007 Microsoft Office web site (http://beta.microsoft.com) to help you see optimal 2007 Microsoft Office Beta1TR performance.

There will be no upgrade from 2007 Microsoft Office Beta 1 to the Beta1TR build. It will be necessary to uninstall previous versions of 2007 Microsoft Office before installing 2007 Microsoft Office Beta-1 refresh. And it will be necessary later to remove the 2007 Microsoft Office Beta-1 refresh before installing 2007 Microsoft Office Beta 2 (this is a deviation from our previously announced plans to allow upgrade from 2007 Microsoft Office Beta 1 to 2007 Microsoft Office Beta 2). The server products will have no upgrade capability from the refreshed Beta-1 versions to the Beta-2 versions.
