Longtime C9 Lurker

Anyone else getting a login prompt when they had to Microsoft.com from 'c.msn.com'? I've verified it's there in IE7 and FF1.5, I assume someone just set some file permission wrong, but still midly amusing.

This is the URL that requires authorization:
http://c1.microsoft.com/c.gif?DI=4050&PS=81555&PI=40472&TP=http%3a%2f%2fwww.microsoft.com&RF=

It's referenced in this block of Javascript:

<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
var msnGif='<'+'img width="0" height="0" alt="" src="http://c1.microsoft.com'+'/c.gif?DI=4050&amp;PS=81555&amp;PI=40472&amp;TP=http%3a%2f%2fwww.microsoft.com&amp;RF='+escape(window.document.referrer)+'">';document.writeln(msnGif);
//-->
</script>

Weird. It's just a webbug they use for clicktracking. Not sure why you get a login prompt.

I can see the headlines now...

MICROSOFT.COM A PHISHING SITE

Microsoft.com used an obscure technical feature known as "HTTP Authentication" to attempt to fool millions of visitors into entering their personal usernames and passwords on a Microsoft-controlled site.

Microsoft could not be contacted for comment.
