turns out, yesterday's fixes from MS introduces this exe to validate ActiveX controls.. So now i have a million of these processes running.

Quote:
This security update introduces a new file, Verclsid.exe. Verclsid.exe is used to verify a COM object before it is instantiated by Windows Explorer

Yuck
It is a MS screw up. Easy to resolve until they put out a patch to fix.

Go into C:  then open windows folder. Open System32 look for veclsid  rename it veclsid.old

Simple as that. Good luck.
I thank you for posting this solution to a very aggravating problem...Problem solved!   Now I was wondering if you could help me fix a printing problem.   I have trouble shot the problem with existing Hewlett Packard printing troubleshooter and still no print jobs are printing!?  The print jobs are there in the queue but they won't print.   I have noticed this problem occur since I installed the new IE 8.0   Could this be the problem?   I tried reinstalling IE 7.0 but can't because I have a later version installed (8.0).   I thought there was a bug in the Beta IE 8.0...Please help!!!

I forget, but can you not uninstall IE8 from control panel (provided you have not installed a service pack AFTER installing IE8)?
I don't know but I just installed Updates today so I think I really srewed myself!!!   I don't even see IE anywhere in the control panel!?!?!?

I would recommend checking the printer then - check the printer settings for that printer (e.g. check the right amount of memory is set if that's relevant to your printer etc) and things like the paper feed - is it registering the presence of paper correctly?
I am not  sure what  you mean by printer settings.   I have tried every troubleshooting possible with the manufacturers' troubleshooter.   I have changed cartridges and it does work  ie it printed out a test page, but it won't print out anything from Wordperfect or from the  Internet!   It is feeding paper, I have run test pages.   I have to assume that the printer is working internally but not from the PC.  Oh and the copier works fine but the scanner doesn't.   It is one of those all-in-one's.    I don't know what to do other than servicing it by a professional, but of course that'll set me back some money...And I'm Scottish so you know how much that hurts!!!

Ugh, don't alter verclsid.exe - that serves an important purpose in preventing several bad shell extensions from getting loaded and messing up Explorer.
Well when I switched to .old extension the annoying boxes that kept popping up haven't come back! I hadn't had these messages until I installed a Beta version of IE 8.0, which I regret installing because I think it screwed up my PC recognizing my printer.   It no longer functions!?!!?!?

Pour me a cab, 'cause I can't drink no more.

The solution to a bug or annoying behavior is not to gut the system until you stop seeing evidence of the problem, without knowing what the side effects are.
I remember having terrible fights as a sysadmin with people who insisted that they 'fixed' a bug that was slowing down their system.  That bug was the antivirus running periodic checks.

In short, don't start renaming system files because someone on the internet told you to if you don't understand exactly what it is they're doing and why.

Below is what I was going to post, but given your more detailed description I will say some other stuff. First check that it is the default printer, and that these applications are not printing to xps writer or the like. And was the test page you printed a Windows one or a custom one from the manufacturer?

These are the kind of control panels I mean (this is a bad example as it is a cheap inkjet and the OEMS options screen does not have many options but if you have, for example, a HP LaserJet you will see a load more, quite important and useful, options). Check all these setting look ok, particularly the print spooling ones.
