Thanks for the heads up...I just got done reimaging from 5361...now to download/install this.
Didn't you read the announcment? It said anyone who leaks this before the public announcment could be kicked off the Beta.

He hasn't leaked it - he's told those of us who ARE on the beta via Connect that there's a new version waiting, which is helpful to those of us who aren't going there every day to check what's new (which is tedious since so little changes day to day)

I'm surprised given how good this beta has been in terms of communicating webcasts and other information that they haven't mailed participants to let them know it's available.

W-hat?
Ick! Why do the ISOs keep getting bigger and bigger?! Beta 1 was like 2.5gig, the CTPs something around 3.4gig and now it's 4gig.

The better question would be, why do they need to be so goddamn big?!

Hey I don't make the rules, but this is outside the beta newsgroups and Connect so is considered a leak.

A general announcment is going out Monday by email to beta testers etc. This was just meant to be a little reward to those who actively participate in the newsgroups.

When you say "considered a leak" please explain by whom, other than yourself? I don't recall anything in the T&C saying "thou shalt not tell anyone when we make new beta downloads available to you" but feel free to correct me.

Any Connect user on the beta can see the download and there is no "announcement" there about not mentioning the release.

This specific release is also mentioned on Longhornblogs and in fact was mentioned by MANY different blogs last week (although the release date was strongly hinted at as being Monday or Tuesday this week, with subsequent contradictions that this release was not going to be made after all).

You say "this was meant to be a reward for those actively involved with the newsgroups" - with what authority do you say that? If true then maybe the lesson to be learnt here is that with so much information available in the download notes area then maybe this should have been made clear there so that those simply using Connect to keep up-to-date would have been made aware of this intention.

The problem is that there are so many conflicting sources of information it's hard to get the real story.

The Connect download area is the main source of information and I've found Channel 9 to be another useful source. To castigate someone for having gone to the trouble of passing on useful information calling it a "leak" seems rather harsh to me, but if the T&C specifically forbid mentioning release numbers outside the closed newsgroups then I'm happy to be corrected. Otherwise I think you owe the original poster an apology. I notice that he, unlike you, is happy to identify himself in terms of blog, public URL and profile entries.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I think there are images in the ISO which speeds up the install process by installing a ready made image.

Channel 9 :)

I got it down, and installed it. I'm looking forward to seeing the improvements.

Wow, where to start.

I suppose a source would be useful. Look at the post titled "5365--It's Coming!!!!" in the announcments newsgroup.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Channel 9 would count as elsewhere no? My post was not to criticize but to inform. I'm sure he wouldn't like to be kicked off the beta for so trivial an offence. In any case it's now a moot point as all the usual suspects have caught wind of it.

Finally I fail to see the relevance of me posting my personal information or not. I don't walk into a bar shouting my name so why would I do the same online, but that's an entirely different matter.

Thanks. Doesn't really alter my main point that Connect, which is where this download is posted for a closed group, makes no such "announcement". But I guess we can agree to disagree on this one!

My point really was that there's a lot of information and misinformation on the net in various blogs and even here on Channel 9. When someone takes the trouble to register who they are and give contact links it shows a certain level of accountability for what they're saying. Trolls NEVER seem to provide this same information. So when someone I don't know and who hasn't provided such accountability starts shouting "Leak! Leak!" about something posted by someone who has provided that accountability I'm rather less inclined to take notice, is all I was trying to say.

When will there be a public beta?

I dont think its fair the Microsoft releases it only to those who have spent thousands of dollars on MSDN subscriptions.

Vincent

Vincent,

Oh young one. We had a thread here where you could reply to get added to the Vista beta...so no you didn't have to pay thousands...you just had to be around for awhile Wink

There will probably be a public beta once it hits beta 2 or RC0 or something like that.

First experiences on 5365:
- Install gives more info: good
- Install still takes too long: bad
- Folder tree no longer plays hide and seek: good
- Indexing service keeps crashing, had to disable it: bad
- Sidebar is on by default: neutral
- Time zone bugs still present: bad
- IE bugs still present: bad
- All hardware on this PC works: good
- Image filtering bug seems fixed: good

Not done much else yet. So far I like the subtle UI updates made since 5342.

Holy potatoes, Batman!  This I gotta try.   Anyone else get a 'corruption on server' message during the download?

Whatever you do, don't install the latest McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i beta on Vista 5365. It breaks, well, everything, and is a pain to get uninstalled again.

Between TAP and this build...there are alot of differences. Subtle but they're there...I like how though my laptop doesn't support Glass it does the fade in and outs on other prompts.

You're not. So despite having an MSDN subscription, which is the sort of people that should be aimed at for betas, we don't see them, or have access to the newsgroups etc

This is something that Microsoft really needs to sort out. It's ridiculous that people can stick there name on a blog and get more access to current builds and information than those of us who have an actual financial investment in Microsoft products.

Either you have very closed betas with carefully selected testers or you treat those investing in your products rather better than you are at the moment.
