Does anyone know if the R2 version of Storage Server can act as an iSCSI target? Can't find a definitive yes/no anywhere on Microsoft.com and everywhere else seems to have conflicting comments.

Of course, having asked, someone will no doubt now point to an obvious link I missed. Tongue Out

Yes. It can.

Microsoft bought WinTarget (iScsi server software) and integrated that functionality into Storage Server R2. The only problem is you can't get Storage Server R2 from anyone except OEM Vendors such as Dell or HP. I blogged about this a while back.

Anyways, if you have WSS R2, you can create iscsi targets and attach to them using the iscsi initiator.

Have... that's the problem. As far as I know, they ship WSS only to OEMs.

Also, I hope that iSCSI target driver will be available seperately for Windows Server.

Ah, no, actually it can't. WinTarget is not in WSS 2k3 R2, it's to be released as a feature pack some time this summer.

StarWind seems a nice application, however for some reason I can't add ATA devices apart from my DVD drives.

It's free so I'm concerned about support for this thing if it goes south on me. I haven't had a chance to play with it yet so I'm interested to hear from anyone who has used it.

Looks intreasting. Do you know if it will still be free when it comes out of RC?

I've been using iSCSI Enterprise Target on Fedora to run an ESX cluster and found that to be rock solid.
