USPTO: Broadest Claims Forgent Asserts Against JPEG Standard Invalid

Don't you just hate companies that are just about 'intellectual property' and go around suing people for royalties rather than actually release products? Especially those that effect so many (like Unisys with GIF (to be fair they do things other than hoard patents) and Eolas with embeded content in web pages).

There should be something in patent law that stops this happening (i.e. 'you must use this patent in a shipping product (or prototype) within a year or it will be placed in the public domain'). Even better, you should show something that implements a patent, before you can be granted it.
