What ever happened to the virtual reality, 3D world of the web? Back in the late 90s, all the hype was about VRML—Virtual Reality Markup Language—which would turn the web into an immersive environment that you'd maneuver around to get to the information you wanted. We're here to tell you that the reports of the 3D web's death are greatly exaggerated. As evidence, we present three 3D browsers that will use that graphics card for something other than gaming: 3B, Browse3D, and SphereXPlorer.
As further proof that the 3D web isn't dead, an XML format called X3D—a free run-time

Testing revealed that it was near unusable.

Humour aside, a true "1 dimensional" web-browser would simply be viewing the HTML as a single line of source-code
Just remembered some students used VRML to create a 3D campus webpage back in 1999 as their final year project. It was truely amazing at the time. And I've spent 2 semesters learning that later.

Sadly it has become quite dead now. But SVG has shown itself to be a quite good replacement for that.

No, a one-dimensional web browser would be invisible. Even his line is 2D because it has both width and height (a small height, but height nonetheless). We wouldn't be able to see anything that's truly 1D.

When we look at 2D objects in the world, we're viewing them in 3D space. You can represent 1D as 2D or in 3D. A single dimension can be represented as a single line (provided you discard height information) or as a string of numbers/text.

Just as when you view 2D stuff in the world you discard the superlfous 3D details.

I don't like this browser, it seems very over-the-top; why do they think the current system of '2D browsers' will not be good enough for us in the future? I think it is the best way to browse the internet.

Since when was the Internet the World Wide Web?

3D representation on 2D surfaces has been a problem for centuries... How about 3D "screens?" Has anyone seen some prototypes?
