What were Robinson and Rooney thinking?

Edit:  Double Post:(
They were thinking it was time to leave Channel 9. But then they reconsidered and saw the truth. Charles is here to guide you in all your ways.

Rooney being tossed was the best thing to happen for England in that game. He was getting in Lennon's way, did absolutely nothing offensively, and drifted too far back to defend. Rooney was an absolute waste in this game. He should have been subbed out well before. Once Lennon came on for Beckham and Crouch came on for Cole after Rooney got tossed, things started happening. At half, England had what 5 shots to Portugal's 12? The attack stats ended fairly even. Keep Rooney off and put Joe Cole or Crouch up front.

Joe Cole is no striker... the thing is, Rooney is no lone striker either. He is best dropping deep, linking up, and making runs from behind another striker. He was asked to play against his normal game...

once he was off, England finnaly got the fire they have lacked through the tournament, and had the best of the game. All 10 men where great, with the possible exception of lampard who disappointed once again.

Once it went to penalties, it was only going to end one way.

Gutted. Mainly because we were actually the better team and deserved to win. Cynical POrtugfal stay in.

Maybe I'm being cynical, but perhaps having a Argentian officials didn't help. If they were another nationality, it may have been different.

Why are we so bad at taking penalties?

Spain, Holland, Argentina and Brazil were also knocked out and they were among the favourites to win, so its not too bad that England did not get through.

And I also want to ask why Germany is so great at taking penalties? as I remember they were beaten in the penalty shootout only once when they met Czech Republic in the European Championship final.

I don't think it had anything to do with the Officals.

There  have been far worse ones. Like Portugal/Holland and Australia/Italy.

We also didn't have the best team formation and players either. Rooney didn't do much and Walcott should have played. Lennon should have been on earlier (and not taken off before the end).

What also I want to know is why Robinson gave up in the shootout. He gave up three goals, when Portgual 's Ricardo gave up only one goal. He should of at least put a little effort into overtime.

That's a bit harsh, goalkeepers rarely save penalties, Ricardo was frankly amazing. What's odd is that we knew he would be and yet still played for penalties.

On the whole, we were a barely mediocre team this year and were lucky to get as far as we did. Here's hoping a change of management might sort us out for the next one.
