With new builds of Vista coming out every month with almost < 3.5 GB of file size..why cant microsoft jus release Updates or Service pack kind of Patches to the CTP and interim builds..
The problem is..When i jus ended up with the Activation Grace period of build 5456.5 am up with 5472 build to downlaod..which will again cost me some <3.5GB of download..

I'd assume the patches would be rather huge if they did do that. Might as well just release a completely new build than patch an old build over and over again.

Not to mention, it would take more time actually creating effective patches.

I’d wager a big part of it is that they aren’t just testing how well it runs but also how well it installs and upgrades over previous versions.

Heck, check the install notes from time to time and you’ll see that in certain builds they ask for people to try installing/upgrading it in a specific configuration... like upgrading a MCE2005 box.

Because the patch, itself, is a new project that would require testing & that means time. MS is trading $$$ for time at this point by requiring you (those lucky 'nuff to be in the beta) to download the whole thing.

BillG has already said there's a 20% Vista won't make it out by Jan-2007.

Correction, new builds are ~2.5GB now.

These are new builds of a beta OS... Patching is not useful here. When you install build xxxx of a beta OS you're installing build xxxx of all the components that make up the OS. There's a lot of dependency coupling in operating systems like Windows, so obviously you don't want to mix and match build versions of dependent pieces...

As the product becomes much more componentized in the future, upgrading pieces during beta testing will make more sense.
