What's bigger than a framework? An Operating System. While many of the Ajax OS's that bill themselves as Operating Systems are nothing more than a pretty desktop metaphor, there is at least one project that aims to build an Ajax OS from the ground up: Atomic OS. It has a ROM and a Kernel and build itself up much like a real operating system on real hardware. The only difference is that everything is written in Javascript. It's interesting what happens when OS design principles are applied to the browser.

I found a UNIX-like web operating environment as well.

It's not a "photo editor" it's a MS paint clone.

As interesting as it is, you can only get so complex with JavaScript I think until you hit a wall.

Interesting. For such a strange though completely dynamic language, JavaScript is proving to be, well, one of those simple languages that was invented for a certain narrow class of simple problems (adding dynamic functionality to HTML/CSS, admin automation scripts) but has taken on a much broader scope (and is used to solve much more complex problems than I'd imagine was ever conceived during its creation and subsequent early iterations).

But I will go out on a limb and say that a true general purpose operating system in JavaScript is a tad outside of the language's core capability.... Then again, what do I know?

I really wouldn't call this an OS, the terms becoming a bit liberal.. theres got to be some reality in that browser javascript doesn't have nearly enough knowledge of the hardware, anything more specialized well... it just aint 'javascript' that we think of, and then theres looking at the gigantic complexities a modern OS deals with..

Sure it might be an OS in the same way as something like DOS, but calling something an OS today only inspires people to compare it to Windows, Linux, OS X.. in which case you are wayyyyyyy out of touch..

(summary; calling oneself something that may (or may not) be technically true, but certainly isn't true in a persons modern 'non-dictionary' perception of it - is lame)
