say what!?
as reported on slashdot / bbc last nite:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6120272.stm

as well as discussed here in the CH...

"In a statement a Microsoft spokesperson said: "Since Zune is a separate offering that is not part of the Plays For Sure ecosystem, Zune content is not supported on Plays For Sure devices."

i really dont get how the biggest software co. in the world - sets up a huge network of partners to trumpet their own technology: "plays for sure" - then when it itself enters the market - refuses to use it.

Now if it was called "Windows Media Approved" - and zune didnt support it - that would be one thing... but the fact that you guys named the eco-system Plays for Sure - and then went and made the term meaningless seems counter-intuative?

the scariest part - is that it seems ms wants the control that apple itunes currently has - a break in technological tradition from ms ( plays for sure is classic ms )  so im not sure how this will work in long run - but if i was a partner in P4S id be pretty peeved off.

So my question is:  are you going to rename the program/ecosystem to "Plays for Maybe"  or "Plays for Sure (sometimes)"

Would zune get a sticker that says: "Plays for Sure (honest!)" or a bullwinkle logo that says: "Dis time for shooure!"

Yeah, I don't get it either. Makes no sense and MS has so far refused to comment.

Personally, for me, it's a deal breaker, Zune has officially been removed from my Christmas wish list. Embarassed

Wow! This is weird. Seems as if one part of MS doesn't know what the other part does... This is a real problem! A company should act reasonable and not in this way.

We'll see how this ends.

Gosh, isn't it a shame that there's nothing that will strip PlaysForSure DRM off all your purchases so you don't have to burn to CD, then rip again, lowering the quality even more ....

My name is Dave Oliver. I'm a Technical Architect.
I read the article yesterday and I thought it sucks big time!

I have GB's of PlayforSure music on my Zen, that took ages to get and lots of money to pay for, so because someone cracked the DRM I have no legal 'upgrade' path.

So, I have no plans to move to Zune and again why should I? I can't see there is a killer reason to ... well not for me anyway.

Monkey see, monkey do, monkey will destroy you!
Anyone else notice that the article talks about not being able to play PlaysForSure tracks on the Zune, while the statements attributed to MS in the article all talk about not playing Zune content on PFS devices?

So, can you play PFS tracks on a Zune?
