This has been a common request.  See the IEBlog for today's post on how this is now easier ..

"Microsoft has recently made Virtual PC 2004 a free download; we’ve taken advantage of that by releasing a VPC virtual machine image containing a pre-activated Windows XP SP2, IE6 and the IE7 Readiness Toolkit to help facilitate your testing and development.
...
Most importantly, you don’t even have to buy an additional Windows license. "

wow.  *insert jaw drop smiley here*

Time-bombed to die in April 2007, but still...  wow.

++ to the IE team!  Didn't expect to see this kind of solution to the IE6 testing issue, but this is the best one they could have come up with!

Question:  will this image pass WGA so that Windows Defender can be installed on it?  Since it's running IE6, I think that would be helpful.

Short answer:  no, it doesn't.  Fails with "Stolen or lost product key".

I had a post that said more, but apparently IE6 refreshes when you change folder options (I was trying to show hidden files and show file extensions).

[edit]
Interesting use of group policy.  I do think that the way it's configured is a little too limiting to test application compatibility--  it's fine for web site compatibility testing, but it removes too much to really be useful for testing desktop applications.

And I think that everyone who uses this would appreciate the extra 2 MB that Paint would add to the package.  How else could I show the world the issues I'm having when developing with IE 6?

Great job, though!

(Am I the only person who downloaded this?)
