Always in motion the future is..
Today, I wake up, first thing I do is go to the computer, check my email.  Next thing I notice, Windows Update is saying there is a new update available to install.

Ok, so, I check it out, its a Windows Defender update KB915597. (1.14.1923.4).  Ok, fine, I install it.  Few minutes later..  Another windows update.  Again, its the same one I just installed. I figure what the heck. So, again, I let it update.  I go and do my thing in the bathroom.. I come back, and I see yet again another Windows Update for the same thing.  Now I'm starting to wonder.. what the heck is going on.  Why the repeated updates?  Doesn't Windows Update know whats already on my machine?

I try and figure out what I had done in the past that might lead to this problem and then I remember something.  Last night, I disabled the firewall and windows defender and a whole slew of things not really needed.  Ok well Windows defender is one of the ones I should keep up..  But this brings the question to mind.  If a service is "Disabled" in Windows Vista, does this mean, any updates that are available to install for these disabled services will keep coming up in Windows Updates repeatedly?    I've already so far allowed it to install 3 times.  Same version number (1.14.1923.4).  Each time it installs successfully too.

I'm going to try something.  Enabling Windows Defender and then allowing the update to happen.

[PAUSE while enabling Windows Defender and updating it.]

Ok, now its enabled and updated..  Checking for more updates..

[PAUSE]

Ah hah.  No new updates. Weird.  So, maybe can anyone here enlighten me to as why this happens or if its already been posted out there some where on the internet provide a link? Smiley

Yeah I get that same package repeatedly on one of my installs too. Not sure what the issue is.

Even though you seem to be checking the details, I thought I should mention that on clean installs of Windows XP, Windows Update does appear to keep offering the same Defender updates. But if you look carefully, after each install/dismissal, the next one is for the previous month, going all the way to sometime in 2005. PITA. Perplexed

Just to note, this is on a VISTA RC2 5744.

Upgrade to RTM and see if it repeats.  RC2 is ancient.

I'm actually surprised they're generating updates for RC2 at all.

No upgrading here, unless someone provides me with a cd/dvd & key. Just don't have that kind of money MS wants for Vista.

And you didn't submit any bugs during beta?  Bummer.

Oh, thought you were talking about RTM. My repro is in RTM though.

You work at MS, you know which distribution list to use to get this resolved.

I'll give you a hint: the most common poster on that list's name rhymes with Orange.

PS: To those of you not at Microsoft, you won't get it - I'm SO evil Smiley

You mean the guy who also doesn't rhyme with glove? I don't know what DL you are talking about. I hope you don't mean longhost. The last time longhost crossposted to IE hot and I tried to help...Perplexed I'll pass on that list.

I'll bug someone though.
