And so the world ends. Not with a bang, but with a whimper.
That's what I used to run on my servers, but that's not the point. I was merely making a light-hearted jab at the retarded analogy you used. It just doesn't work for software, it's a fun joke (from a great geek) but that's all that it is.

And guess what, my copy of Vista Ultimate was free (as in beer) too. Wink

Software is like sex, its not always a great idea to get it from someone who gives it away to anyone.

Need Microsoft SUX now!
Heh so would it be just like Visual Studio Express no Add Ons. Meaning certain parts of the registry would be lock down. (No new programs requiring reg edits could be installed) Interesting idea not sure microsoft will buy in. Call back in 5 years when computer cost 300 dollars:P

Oh wait those are called consoles trickey trickey.

Then microsoft will have to look at their employee's huge disposable incomes and downsize.

Wait, what? I never heard that.

Okay, its speculation, maybe I spend too much time on Slashdot and Digg.  Although here is a funny quote I came across on a youtube comment somewhere.

2000: "Remember when we used to pay for our email accounts?!"
2010: "Remember when we used to pay for our internet access?!"
2020: "Remember when we used to pay for our operating system?!"
money talks. only a matter of time.

WRONG!

we all pay, just a mater of "to whom" and "When" and "How Much"

take email, "free webmail"
how free is it? really?
the folks who run the servers have to pay bills, they have to get $$ from someone.... it may be adverts, it may be by selling other stuff, but somehwere someone pays them to do it.

and some where down the line you pay for it....

free Internet access?  ok so go run fiber to my home and give me a GIG of internet at your cost... how long can you afford that ?
-- you gonna get say sprint / verizon or someone else to let you get a free ride off them? I think not....

No such thing as a Free Lunch folks....
anyone who says otherwise is selling you something....

Yes it sounds cold, but they are out to make money just like everyone else (well, except for the free software folks).

"Free software folks" (myself included) have many ways of making money with it – but unlike Microsoft, we take the ethical road and care about the good of everyone while doing so.

Remember when we used to pay for our cars?

2030: Remember when there was fuel for our cars?

I don't know, I don't see it happening. Interesting idea, though.

For the 2010 one, I do see it coming...

In Hong Kong, if you just use internet to surf the websites with proper content, plus sending email and use IM clients perheps, you can use the free WiFi internet access provided by the government and don't need to pay a dime to any ISPs.

Now if it does not block port 22, it'd be perfect for me. Wink

I believe it was $10 billion for development costs. Microsoft is planning to spend billions more to mass market Vista next year.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2003460386_btview04.html

Well at least Microsoft keeps legal tenders circulating with all this spending. Global treasuries don't have to work so hard printing more money.

Vincent

They should spend billions to fix Vista!. Everyone knows that Vista is the Millenium 2 of operating systems (A Joke!). Only Paul Thurrott thinks it's great. This is what Microsoft produced after spending millions in R&D. Linux and Mac OSX beat it hands down!. Funny how I would have to spend hundred of dollars to upgrade my photo editing apps to just work with Vista. They work plenty fine with XP!. As well as RAM, hardrive storage, etc.?. Not to mention driver issues, cd burning compatability issues etc. For what?. An operating system!!?.  If they spend billions in mass marketing Vista, then they are wasting money!. Not many are upgrading, even after the service pack.  Where are all the Ultimate Extras. Another empty promise?.   And now with talks of a modular operating system, starting with Windows 7. Will Microsoft ever learn!?. Probably Not!!
And everyone hear is thinking "What give away an operating system that Microsoft spent millions to develop". Well Linux developers gives theirs away for free "Ubuntu etc.". And it beat it hands down in security!.  It wasn't CRACKED!!.  Vista was!. So much for millions spent he he!.
RandyRants wrote:

Why wouldn't they offer it for free?  The biggest reason I see is that of customer service, specifically the cost of CS.

That's where the "free" could end though.  In the same sense that you'd get the OS for free but pay for the software, you'd also still pay for the support.

This idea follows the disposable razor blade paradigm.  Get the razor for pratically nothing, then spend the rest of your life buying blades for it.

Linux isn't free.  If you're a corporation you still have to pay for it.  Just its open source doesn't mean it isn't part of a business model.
