Well I just had an interesting experience with Xbox support. My launch 360 was working perfectly. I thought I was one of the lucky ones who got a good batch, but alas not so more. Turned it on tonight and it keeps freezing on the dashboard and I get system error messages all over the place. So I though I'll ring Xbox support; they will be able to help.

Well I was wrong. I was told simply that there was nothing they could do because I purchased it Christmas 2005 and that I would be better off going to local electronics store to have it fixed!

I really can’t understand support. I have, not even once, been given useful information from a support line. I don't know why I even bother!

Now for the important question. Does anyone know what I can do to get this fixed? I don't feel I should have to pay for what is ultimately Microsoft’s error - especially with MS even admitting the first batch was dodgy!

Have you tried to go to the store that sold you the xbox?

Not yet. I will try tomorrow, but I am not sure if I still have the receipt. I will have a dig around tonight.

My best suggestion would be to see if you could get a 25% discount and pay for the repair, once you get it back you'll receive a 90-day warranty which gives you the opportunity to purchase an extended warranty.

that really sucks man..

I bough 2 xboxs when they were released here in Aus, and they both failed on me.

One failed shortley after I modded it (so I dont expect them to fix it) but it didnt fail due to the mod - i got the three leds of death.

So I purchased a third one, after which my second box died with... the three red leds of death.

Fortunately this one was still covered under warranty and I posted it off and got it back within a week - however:

 - the right hand side of the case (the grey bit that has holes in it for venting air in/out) was cracked 40% up the side and missing the front bottom clip so it flaps around and looks like its been dropped
 - around the USB ports on the front there is a grey piece of adhesive plastic that was not stuck down when they re-assembled the case and blocked one of the USB ports

I must say I expected more, and was really happy with the telephone support (some indian guy trying to sound like an American - but he did a great job) and the turn around time - just the quality of the repair.

I believe both of my units came from the bad batch, and I think they should extend the warranty of that batch to 2 years without questions - as there is definately something that consistantly goes wrong in them.

edit: unbeleivably there is nobody in Aus that can repair my other broken xbox - i have called around and they all say they cant fix it - so I want t know what happens if they fail out of warranty!

Is it a launch unit? I heard that MS is fixing the launch units for free.

Oh, I just bought one and didn't get the warranty. Now I'm scared.
It has not been 90 days, do I have any options?

I have had no luck getting my wife's new notebook with Vista Home Premium and Media Center to add the Xbox 360 as a Media Extender. It can't find it. Weird.

I have an XP machine which I loaded Zune software on and the Xbox finds it fine and can play media off of it.

90 days?! Is that the only warranty you guys get with your box?

In Aus we get 1 year standard on both core/premium...

Perhaps its a difference in consumer law..?

John: make sure you have your network set to 'Home' (private) and you have enabled network discovery - that one got me..

Go to Walmart and buy a new 360, take it home and swap it with your existing 360. Then return it to walmart for a refund.

I have no tolerance for these crumby warranties and empty promises when it comes to these expensive machines.

I don't think it is unrealistic for people to expect these things to have at least a 1 year or 2 year warranty.

Dropping $500 on a console that only works for 3 months is aggravating.

Sorry MS, but you need to work on your $$$ product warranties on the expensive toys, and your support is terrible.

No one likes having a broken toy, especially after dropping lots of dough on it.

The cost of a service contract in the United States (U.S.) is:

  • Xbox 360 Core System – one year for 24.95 U.S. dollars

  • Xbox 360 System (with hard drive and wireless controller) – one year for 29.95 U.S. dollars

  • Xbox 360 Core System (no hard drive) – two years for 49.90 U.S. dollars

  • Xbox 360 System (with hard drive and wireless controller) – two years for 59.90 U.S. dollars
  • The cost of a service contract in Canada is:

  • Xbox 360 Core System – one year for 26 Canadian dollars

  • Xbox 360 System (with hard drive and wireless controller) – one year for 26 Canadian dollars

  • Xbox 360 Core System (no hard drive) – two years for 52 Canadian dollars

  • Xbox 360 System (with hard drive and wireless controller) – two years for 52 Canadian dollars

  • I usually go for the 1 year, also these prices are pre-taxed

I'm having some trouble getting media sharing to work on my Vista box as well, other people here don't seem to have problems.  The likely culprit I've found is firewall settings.  I finally figured out that OneCare fixed my XP box connection problem, but I don't have it on my Vista machine yet.  You could try the OneCare firewall and see if that helps.

Or if you bought with a credit card, you are technicaly buying off a bank, so you can claim a refund off them.

I wouldn't have thought that it would be that different anywhere else.

MS has recently upped the 90 days to 1 yrs... retroactively to all Xboxes
That's incorrect, the extension was to a select few, and the promotion is over now. If you'd like to see the status of your warranty, go service.xbox.com

So if you're still in warranty you may have to send your console.

My "all" == your "select few" == all Xbox purchased in the U.S. & Canada from now onward...

My warranty ends in 2 months. Most of the customers I get, their warranties are over and they had launch date consoles

Still that's far from "a select few" and "promotion is over"...

But I'll say this, the Xbox is the very first thing I bought extended warantee for...

That says something about the build quality.  I would consider it unsatisfactory.  (hence why I don't own an XBox, or a PS3, because both have a history of poor build quality.  I'm lucky in that I own a early PS2 that still works.)

I figured out my problem. I have a cable modem + router, then a switch, then my wife's Vista PC, then another router, then the Xbox. I plugged in her PC to the second router (that feeds the Xbox) and it found it ok. Still can't connect from connection to the first router to the Xbox... although XP and Zune can... I guess that's a Vista security feature and not a bug.

The warranty time is not 90 days anymore, MS has estended the warranty for the 360 to 1 year a month and half ago:
