Mexican Carlos Slim Zips Past Gates in Rich Ranks

"Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim is the world's richest man, worth an estimated $67.8 billion, after overtaking Microsoft founder Bill Gates, according to a respected tracker of Mexican financial wealth on Monday.

A 27% surge in the share price of America Movil, Latin America's largest cell phone operator controlled by Slim, from March to June made him close to $8.6 billion wealthier than Gates, said Eduardo Garcia in Sentido Comun, the online financial publication he founded.

Garcia estimated that Gates was worth $59.2 billion."

great! now lets see if he donates 90% of that to poor people (or even his countrymen)

Erm.. I'm not sure that is very important to people on this forum.

We all have our idols but if we aspire to people just because of their finances then we're extremely superficial. Money isn't the be all and end all!

Yeah, Bill Gates is loaded, seriously loaded, but how much money does that guy give to charity? Shedloads! Yeah he can afford but at least he does it. I saw the guy at the Live 8 show in Hyde Park, London. When Bob Geldof introduced him I remember thinking "God, he's going to get loads of boo's here". But, thankfully, he didn't. He just walked on stage and look extremely nervous. He's a normal guy like you and me who saw an opportunity and took it.

I'm not interested in who is the richest man on the planet. I've got my own family to feed. Closer to home and far more important to me.

Bill Gates is worth (approx) $59.2 billion and is worth it. His vision has changed the way the world sees computing as a whole. Anyone remember the days of the 80's when you'd have several different machines with different operating systems and those ancient floppies that resembled 12" vinyl (although not quite 12" Wink)

For those who don't like it I can think of two words:

It looks like Slim's worth is based on the value of his shares, and these can fluctuate. Bill Gates' assets are more solid.

Let's see Garcia philanthropicize Mexico!

Or in some other way keep pace with Gates & Buffet's gratuity and leadership as moral agents in the world.

That is how the rich Earn respect, they can always buy support...

it would be nice enough for him to petition to reform mexico's laws to allow a better standard of living be created.. doubt it though

Like Steve Jobs said in that interview with the both of them, that Bill Gates isn't trying to go to the grave the richest guy. Some have....he ain't one of them.
