The August 2007 issue of Wired magazine includes an article by Steve Silberman entitled: Where is Jim Gray?

The article provides a behind the scenes view of the search for Microsoft researcher Jim Gray and his sailboat the Tenacious missing since last January.

"...Gray was one of the best and brightest in a generation of problem-solvers, and also one of the most humble. When conference hosts tried to introduce him as a database guru or god, he would say gently, "I'm just a programmer."... "

I was under the assumption he's marked as "Missing, presumed dead". If he never made it back to shore like... 2 months ago it means he perished out in the seas.

Jim Gray was a real legend in Computer Science and Mathematics and he really has shaped various sectors of Computer Science in ways that live on in his infinite memory.

Although there remains the possibility of him still being found alive, this tragically is disappearing into the mists of deep improbability - he disappeared at the end of January this year on a solo boating trip and the search for him was called off in February.

We all owe our deepest respects to Gray's work (detail of which can be found here), and it is a credit to him and his family that his work lives on at Microsoft Research.

He will be sorely missed.
