Gore and U.N. Panel Win Peace Prize

Al Gore and the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize Friday for their efforts to spread awareness of man-made climate change and lay the foundations for counteracting it.

''I am deeply honored to receive the Nobel Peace Prize,'' Gore said. ''We face a true planetary emergency. The climate crisis is not a political issue, it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity.''

It finds lightbulbs.

Quick, somebody change Raymond's password before he comes to the Coffeehouse!

I am happy to see that people are now taking serious view of our environment.

What's so Nobel about war anyway?

<insert Axl Rose whistling />

Great, he won a prize, mission accomplished.  Hopefully that'll shut him up for awhile.

raymond's worst nightmare has come true! His fud campaign on Channel 9 didn't work. Hopefully he will realise that he was on the wrong forum all the time.

Amen.

I can only hope and pray.

Unfortunately, I still think he is going to run for President in 2008.

Well, he is no President Roosevelt

Don't forget that paragon of virtue Yasser Arafat in 1994.

Crazy!

Remember Iran and why the American people elected President Ronald Reagan.

One of my favorite economists said it best:

Jimmy Carter's Ignoble "Peace" Prize

by Thomas Sowell  (October 16, 2002)

"...While the Nobel Prize continues to be the most prestigious in the world -- and deservedly so in fields like science and economics -- the Nobel Peace Prize has already been given to a terrorist thug like Yasser Arafat, so perhaps Jimmy Carter is a worthy successor to him, even if he is one of the sorriest presidents and ex-presidents in the history of the United States."

But if Rush Limber had won it (snicker), then that's a different story, right ? LOL.

Because Carter pissed them off and so the iranians in power at the time decided, on purpose, not to release the hostages until Reagan took power.

The GOP could have put a dead weasel in a suit up for office and the weasel would have won.

And the weasel probably wouldn't have created as much national debt.

And so, an economist is fit to judge the merits of the peace price?

Let's see:

Learned a hard lesson on international politics from the Middle East? Check
Made repeated efforts to broker peace in the Middle East over the last 3 decades?  Check
Spent much of his life devoted to habitat for humanity?  Check

Yep, that makes him a sorry ex-president.

You can say what you will about his presidency, but the guy has spent the last 30 years doing the best he could to create peace and give shelter.  It's almost as if he's attempting to atone for some mistake in his past.  What a jerk, that guy.

The nomination of Rush Limbaugh was a joke Minh and the point was made.

You come out of the Little Ice Age, what would you hope and expect global temperatures to do--rise.

You burn more fossil fuels, what would you expect to happen, more CO2 emissions.

Seems pretty obvious to me.

The issue is what is causing global temperatures to rise, not CO2.

Never did in the past, temperature rises first, so say the experts.

Cool

PS  Don't tell Al. but it is cooling.  Wink

The man won a Nobel prize for making huge amounts of money for lies and misdirecting people. This does nothing but tell me that the Nobel prize is worthless.

It's awesome how you feel so much more qualified in deciding what is worth and what is not than the people whose job is actually to decide exactly that....

The man shares the Nobel prize with the IPCC for pushing the topic into the public eye and doing so for longer than I suspect you've been alive.  I'm still waiting to see where he 'lied'.  He's been wrong and to be honest, he gets much of the science wrong, but the point behind his babbling is still valid.

Nobody is going to pay attention to a room full of scientists (sadly) and Gore could have spent the last 8 years wallowing in self pity or shooting spitballs at the current administration.  Instead, he went back to doing what he did before he was even vice president and used his clout for something positive.

So, yes, genius, the Nobel prize is worthless.

Luckily, it was left in the hands of people who are more prone to thinking about peace and less prone to being internet jackholes.

Which are you?

Again, I'd like to point out that the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Yasser Arafat.

This is really lame though.  I mean they turned down a woman who saved 2000 children in the Holocaust for some guy who made a movie about lies.  A British court actually declared official inaccuracies in his film.

Nobel peace prizes are basically worthless now, they even give them to terrorists too.

If your not carefull, you'll end up being mean spirited. Personally, I would rather think about peace...but that's just not all that realistic when I see so many power hungry ego maniacs in high places operating on insane levels of irrational thinking. Since we can agree that he gets the science wrong and we can agree that he does what he does willingly/knowingly...I call it a lie when he willingly/knowingly spreads things that are not accurate. Accuracy and truth is why I come to places like this. If I'm wrong about something then I will be the first to bow. But the attitude your giving me isn't going to convince me of anything.

Now...on to something a little more interesting....
Didn't the topic get pushed into the public eye long before Gore's movie?
