I haven't followed this lately but... are you using a theme/renderer that specifically doesn't use subpixel antialiasing or is that the default in (I guess) Ubuntu?

It's the default in every distro I've used, because subpixel AA doesn't work on CRTs, and some people just don't like it.

Er... it used to work fine on my old Trinitron CRT...

Actually I've found ClearType and other subpixel font rendering techniques work better on Trinitrons than other types of CRTs.

But it's hit and miss. The technique was designed for LCDs, whether it helps on a CRT or looks awful varies a lot.

Hmm. Yeah. No comment.

I never used Cleartype in XP but in Vista it looks different some way. I have a 19" Trinitron on the left and an LCD on the right and I like it turned on.
I think Bill Hill explained that Vista's cleartype is different than older XP implementations.
So far Vista is the only OS I've used that has smoothing that doesn't annoy me.

From the small screenshot, I believed it to be Leopard.

I could have made it even closer if I wanted to go thru the major hassle of getting the "mac menu" hack working (getting the program menus to appear in the top panel bar like OS X).

However, to achieve this requires manual patching of GTK+ source and building it beacuse Fedora doesn't have binary RPMs for it. I did try once but GCC and Pkgconfig decided to complain about missing dependencies instead, which weren't missing according to yum (pkgconfig is different than yum/rpm).

Anyway, this "Leopard" has spaces, stacks (I made the stacks icon), fancy dock, sounds, X11 cursor, login menu (GDM), boot splash, etc. Coverflow in Finder and Time machine are obviously not there, however. Wink
