Make it so
...well, at least according to this blog entry from the MSDN Subscriptions Blog.

It's going to be a busy week, switching all my Beta 2 projects to RTM Wink

Man it would be great to have VS2008 to play around with over the holiday Smiley  Oh, and Game Studio 2.0 beta would just be icing on the cake.

Can't get too greedy though.

So when will there be a give away for all of us (i.e. students) that do not have MSDN subscriptions?

Have they ever had those?

VS08 isn't as "revolutionary" as VS2005, so I doubt they'll be one of those fancy-shmancy Launch Events with the free IDEs.

Let's wait and see.

I received this week the invitation for the TechDays 2008 in Switzerland Big Smile :

Our next big event will be TechDays 2008, where we will celebrate the launch of Visual Studio, Windows Server and the upcoming SQL Server 2008. While preparation work is already up to speed, we expect to have our website live around mid December. Every TechDays attendee will receive a free full version of Windows Server 2008 (Standard Edition), Visual Studio 2008 (Standard Edition) plus the latest SQL Server 2008 edition available, all not for resale. Therefore, make yourself ready and save the dates: Geneva: 12/13 March 2008, Basel 19/20 March 2008.

Last time I went, it was something like CHF 80.- (50€) for students (cheaper than the train ticket to go to Geneva from where I live...).

Code to live, but Live to code.
Very Good To know.

I cannot wait to try RTM. I hope its as good as the testers report.

Let the LINQ evolution begin.

Thanks a lot.

It's only worth me attending if it's Professional or above. Otherwise I'll nab the Academic edition (usually a heavily discounted and rebadged Professional version)

Hopefully the same offer will be on in Birmingham. I'll be there, November 28th, yeah babay!

Of course it *looks* like my nick is just my name, but actually, well, it's just my name.

I admit it, I grinned from ear to ear when I saw the post on the subscriptions blog.

I personally can't wait to get my hands on it...(except that obviously well, yeah, I'll have to, until it's actually there).

And then there's the first CTP of the MVC framework not too long afterwards...

And I do hope we see a Silverlight 1.1 beta before too long.

Sigh. I'd better start forgetting stuff to make room...(I think I'll start with COBOL. Dear God please let me forget that).

I guess the free Express Editions will be released at the same time.

I am talking about the full Visual Studio 2008 Standard software, not the express versions.

They did. I have a free copy of Visual Studio 2005 Standard to prove it. I also have a free copy of Visual Basic .NET 2003.

What is the difference between Professional and Standard that makes Professional so much better?

According to my Academic Edition of VS2005 (AKA Standard):

  • XSD and XSLT editing and debugging

  • Advanced debugging tools, including cross machine debugging

  • Visual Basic and C# stored procedure development

I was pretty excited to see that blog entry!

Is TFS coming out near the same time? Or is there going to be a gap between VS and TFS this year, too?

According to this page:
  • "Full" user-experience
  • XSLT Editor
  • Crystal Reports
  • Remote Debugging
  • SQL Server 2005 integration
  • Complimentary SQL Server 2005 Developer or Standard license
    • The Launch Event version of VS2005 Pro comes with SQL Server Standard, the Retail version has the Developer license
    • But the installer comes with Express anyway
And I use Remote Debugging a lot (what with running ASP.NET programs under IIS on Windows Server, or debugging daemons and winforms apps on my DC).

I attended TechDays in Basel (Switzerland) and I would have gone anyway. However, with regards to these announcements, I feel somewhat ripped off - the bundles we received consist of evaluation-only versions of the products. And the TechDays license states that the software can be used beyond the one-year limit, but apart from that, it's still evaluation-only. That's a joke and about as respectable as the offers that usually go into my spam folder. Mad
