By default the iPod Touch is just a media player with Safari, some Youtube-version of Safari, a read-only calendar, a contact list and a world clock.

To get the other stuff, including a read-write calendar, you're to jailbreak it and install Installer.app (just point it to a specific site in the built-in browser).

Currently installed using it is: VT100 terminal, BSD userland, OpenSSH, SummerBoard (some customizer), a RSS reader, a dictionary, iPhone Mail, iPhone Notes, MobileMoney, a SysInfo tool, MobileTodo, a finder clone, irssi, ncftp and ScummVM (with Monkey Island and Indy4).

How's that not cool?

I think it's about the fact that if you're a l33t hax0r (or can use tools created by l33t hax0rs), you can shoehorn a set of programs designed for keyboard UI onto a device without a keyobard. This is considered "cool" (and agree, it is "cool" to a certain extent. Like running a web server off an Atari 2600 is "cool"), as opposed to Windows Mobile devices, where you can pretty much just install programs and use them (without a keyboard).
