Bored of Captions

Hi Guys,

Working for the UK MoD, we have to put up with Internet systems that are still Office 2000 and have no control over them at all.  Now it seems that Microsoft are putting all their latest documents in MSDN etc as Office 2007 or XPS formats.  So I cant read them (well, I cant at work anyway)

Does anyone know of an online system that will somehow allow you to view Office 2007 files (I guess they would have to be uploaded somehow) or XPS files ???

Thanks

Mike

Can't you use the Office 2007 viewer apps?

Hi

You might want to consider asking your IT department to upgrade, but failing that, you can always try Open Office.

If you have Virtual PC (or equivilent) installed you will be able to install open office in there even if you can't install programs locally due to administrative overrides.

Failing all of this, you should ask the IT department to distribute the
Microsoft Office Compatability pack for Word, Excel and Powerpoint 2007 file formats. It's free and works in conjunction with Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 which are all also free.

Hope this helps.

There aren't any. Or rather, they are just the full versions running in trial mode (after the 30 day full functionality demo) so installing them is probably not an option.

I found this online, but I suggest that you don't use a free online tool if the documents in question might contain information you wouldn't like to be sent to the press.

Which will not actually view any of the new OOXML formats without also installing the compatibility pack, and do not support any of the new features introduced in Office 2007.

Well they're new. I was sure the Office team previously said they weren't going to do standalone viewers. Maybe that was just OneNote or maybe I'm getting forgetful in my old age....

Getting any change to the systems I use is virtually a non existant option, but I will have to try that.  (There should be no impact in installing the Office viewers should there ?)

I'd like to say no, but there would be. If you install the 2007 filters they're also going to affect any versions of Office you have installed, by allowing you to load newer formats.

(Having done some MOD work I know exactly how fussy your network admins can be *grin*)

Isn't there a converter app for the Mac? I remember thinking that it was a shame that Mac office people had to use a converter instead of a plug-in.

Perhaps someone with a mac can batch-convert everything you want over to the old office format?
