"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.  Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."  From the Windows Vista operating system.  There exists no Set Associations control panel.  The file being double clicked has the filename extension .DOC.  That should not be a mystery to Windows.  In this case, it is.  Default Programs in Control Panel looks promising, but it doesn't list Microsoft Office Word as one of the possible programs an association can be created for.  Design-wise, this is a non-starter.  Help is no help because it has no idea what a Set Associations Control Panel is.

Can you manually browse to the office installation folder and choose word.exe from there?

Is this a .doc file or is it from the new office (.docx)
I have this now too whenever I try to click an email link in Live Mail.
I've just started checking my mail via browser now , but would still like to know how to fix it.

Tried uninstalling & reinstalling Live but still no good & like already stated , there is no "associations control panel" in vista.

It finds lightbulbs.

Also, there's still no way to change the program that launches when you choose "Edit". Too bad Windows 7 is feature complete, guess this is still useless. Sad

I'm planning on working on a proper file types editor (as part of my work on Anolis / xpize / Vize). Any special requests for features and stuff?

make sure you can change file type icons. Please. And I would totally use your software.
Why not just duplicate the UI and  functionality of the XP file types dialog, minus the DDE stuff.

Windows XP's editor blurred the one-to-many relationship of extensions to actual types. It acted as through an extension definition contained all the information when it doesn't.

I'm thinking of having this:

The main list has two modes: Extensions or Types. When in Extension mode you can define a new type for that extension that sets a new icon (but copying values from the existing type so it appears to override the old ones rather than starting anew). When in Types mode you can see a list of all extensions that refer to that type.

It would require me to load the entire extension part of HKCR key into memory, but that's a small price to pay.
