So, from a techy point of view, what do you folk think we'll see in 2008?

Apple Ultraportable?

Vista making inroads into business?

Linux taking over on the desktop?

With more paid-for content coming online (Apple are signing with Fox and Sky has signed up with everybody), I reckon that this will be year of the home server.

I predict continued silence over W-7. As they say "Vista is here, now", and not enough people are using it. Wink Then I think it's a safe bet that we'll see IE8 in 2008.

Look, no errors.
Lots of talk about IE8, from both developers and users.

In 2009, IE8 may even be released.

The famous Bink.nu "expect list" is back! Just as previous years, I made a list of what releases we can expect from Microsoft. 2005 and 2006 turned out to be pretty accurate, the only things wrong weren't my mistakes but delays or change of plans. Last year I also started to make a list for 2007, becuase it is a lot of work I never managed to get it done and it never got published. To avoid that I publish what I have now and add stuff over the coming weeks, also based on your feedback!

If you think someting is missing or wrong please let me know through a comment or sending an email to bink at bink nu.
This list is based on facts, assumptions and wild guesses. Again it is not complete yet and will be updated by your feedback!

I think Steve is kind of cheating as pretty much everything he announced has already been discussed in public anyway.

Isn't the release for surface around about now? Have they ironed the kinks out yet?

Surface is cool for the specific functionality it provides but isn't priced within the budget of most consumers.

Plus, underneath all the motion sensing camera equipment is a sub-par 1 GHz or so machine.

I think Surface makes more sense for buisnesses who want to sell time on the Surface to their customers; sort of like a next-generation Kiosk system.

It's been delayed. Search for "Microsoft Surface failing to surface" on the Channel 9 forums for an explaination.

MS didn't invent surface, they copied it from Mitsubishi.

Any bets on these aspects?

1 - "full" control set
2 - playback of synthesized audio
3 - 3D

I'm betting on 1 for 2.0. But 2 and 3 for 3.0.

We'll see the first real decline in spinning-platter HDDs for laptops and the rise of solid-state disks for ultraportables where disk space isn't a priority. The iPod Classic will be discontinued by the end of 2009 and the iPod Touch becomes the main model with the introduction of 80GB solid-state storage.

The GeForce 9 will be introduced in Q12008, and somehow I'm expecting a redux of the ill-fated GeForce FX (NVidia's been getting complacement lately)

And near the end of 2008 we'll see screenshots of pre-beta builds of Windows Vienna.

Forget SP1, I predict that in Febuary of '08 that Visual Studio 2008 will be released for sale to the general public, not just available as a trial or MSDN subscriber exclusive download.
