Part of me asks "why?"

These kids in Africa aren't exactly going to be making web transactions or handling sensitive data.

This whole "One Laptop Per Child" really PISSES ME OFF... those poor b*stards don't have cloths or food on table, and these people want to give them laptops... whoohoo!!! Now all the problems are solved!

These m***** f****** should build roads or water sanitation plants not give them a freaking laptop which is pure JUNK.

Fail. Epic fail.

blehbleh, if that is your real name, you're missing the point of OLPC completely and buying up the propaganda of the ignorant.

The OLPC is not being distributed or sold in places of "dire need", but in places where all the basic infrastructure is already there, where people are living fine, this is to improve on that by adding an ability to learn more, self-improve, and make things better.

The OLPC project is not reappropriating funds for other causes, like emergency relief aid. It's pretty much 100% ethical, confirmed even more with the recent departure of Intel for whatever evilness they were doing.

Um. The digital divide only adds to the disparity of wealth betwen hemispheres. While it is a great concern; not everyone is starving to death in Africa. Many are trying to find ways to bring their communities and nations out of complete poverty using . . . the same tool as we all do: commerce.

I think you are the one buying the propaganda... I wonder how many countries you been in?

If you must know, I've experienced third world poverty first hand during my time in the far east. Specifically we used to live just a few metres away from the massive shanty towns of Manila. And I've been to these relevant countries:

  • Philippines
  • Hong Kong
  • Malaysia
  • Mainland China
  • Singapore

Additionally, my parents and sister lived in South Africa during apartheit, my mother worked as a physiotherapist in a "coloured" hospital and treated all kinds of ill folk. I learned a lot from them. And said sister, a 5th year med-student, did her elective in rural Malawi in the type of areas where the OLPC is being deployed.

So don't talk crap to me about "poverty".

I don't blame tech guys though. How would you know about societies and poor people? You got teh Internats. So you think you know it all! Like the old generations with TVs, they thought they knew it all.

So, how many countries have you been in? And aren't you a tech guy too? Which woud mean that you, too, think you know it all?

Wait.. Why, exactly, will we regret thinking back to 'that "fool" we used to laugh at'?

I'm pasty.  Is pasty a color?
<puts on tin-foil hat>Don't you know it's the OLPCs hidden agenda that these "laptops" that are sponsered by the G1G1 program will "fall" into the hands of terrorists, militant groups, and corrupt governments rather than the poor school children for Education. Of course these groups will need Quantum encryption to hide their online transactions from the authorities.</tin-foil hat>

In all serious, this isn't even OLPC doing the development exclusively. OLPC, especially with their leader, seems to aim to make themselves into the defacto computer systems in markets where there isn't large volumes of current computer competitors. The best way to do that is to introduce the computer into the business world or the education world. Since education is seen as a more philanthopist endeavour and indeed has some more returns on the investment in the long term makes it ideal for OLPC to target. Whether Negroponte has any such long term plans remains to be seen, however the way he's acted to any corporate company providing an alternative to his XO in similar and the same markets doesn't make me believe he has completely direct intentions.

Hard work never killed anybody, but why take a chance?

Not to hijack this thread, but does anyone have one of these laptops.  I have been playing with one for about two weeks now.  I'm nota  linux fanboy, but it really is a neat device and I have enjoyed using it to check emails, blog, and even remote desktop into my home computer occasionally.
