What: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) was released to manufacturing today and will start being available to customers in March, starting with Microsoft Volume Licensing customers.

What the hell guys?

Edit: Oh, remaining languages will RTM in April. I guess that makes that, what, a June release for localised SP1's?

It depends on your language as English, French, Spanish, German, and Japanese will be ready by Mid-March.

In mid-March, we will release Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Update (in English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese) and to the download center on microsoft.com.  Customers who visit Windows Update can choose to install Service Pack 1.  If Windows Update determines that the system has one of the drivers we know to be problematic, then Windows Update will not offer SP1.  Since we know that some customers may want to update to SP1 anyhow, the download center will allow anyone who wants to install SP1 to do so.

Wow. Well done for ticking the moron box.

Seriously, what the hell? Where on earth would you pull that assumption from?

I don't know, from history with Microsoft and their non-delivery of service packs for older OSes.

You mean operating systems that are out of their support period. Unlike, for example, XP is right now.

Seriously that was pathetic. You need more coffee before trolling ok?

The RC and RC builds have been pulled from MSDN, can we expect to see the RTM on there soon! ???

Calling someone pathetic without checking your facts is pathetic.

You fool! You fell into his trap.

Of course, Win2k is in its "extended support period", so no service packs for you, and only paid patches. (Provided you're not a consumer, or hardware manufacturer.)

I really didn't. SP5 was in production while in the normal support period.

And, effectively, came out as the Security Roll-up package for Windows 2000 SP4.

Your point is?

"Security Roll-up" != Service Pack 5

Er ... why not?

Correct. Because of two things:

1. You have to install SP4 first, if you've installed SP4 it saves on download time.

2. If they'd called it SP5 they'd have been obliged to terminate support for SP4 after 2 years, under the Windows product lifecycle, which many businesses did not want.

This is bullcrap. The only reason that they're not offering it right now is because of a bug where you might have to reinstall drivers. Why can't they just release it on Microsoft Download now, and then push the fixed version on Windows Update later?

A "service pack" in Microsoft is a big deal. It receives extensive testing and care. And update roll up is not a "service pack" by Microsoft's own admission, but rather a bunch of individual patches installed at the same time. If you want to argue that an "update rollup" is a service pack, go argue with Microsoft themselves, not me. Windows 2000 SP5 was canceled according to the official party line.

Actually, I was more curious as to what the difference was between a 'service pack' and a 'rollup'. I always thought that a service pack was just a collection of updates between certain dates.

Still, don't really see what the problem is here. If a company is brining out a new version of an operating system, then I don't really see why they should be still building on the old one, aside from security patches and show-stopping bug fixes.

Tell me, is the Linux community still building new functionality into Version 1.0 of the kernel?

Hooray Microsoft!!

Hrm. Are you openily admitting to piracy?

Interesting...
Piracy or not, today I read online that already there were pirate groups circumventing the SP1 WGA.
WGA in SP1 was patched for the BIOS hack and for some registry hack to turn a Vista copy in a "genuine" one.
