Peek-a-boo

PressPass: It sounds like your strategy is to have different price points in different countries and regions, depending on whether they’re developed or emerging markets. What will the changes look like when they’re in place?

Brooks: Our research, along with feedback from promotions by our retail partners, has illustrated powerfully to us the degree to which customer needs vary, not only between developed and emerging markets, but also within markets. But the desire for the best value remains the same. As such, the Windows Vista editions involved and specific price decreases will likewise vary from region to region across the globe.

Can anyone say the word gouge? Of course you can.

Because staples are only about £3 for a box of 200, whereas cables are £5 each. (depending on the cable type.)

Frankly buying vista for 500 staples is a bargain.

"In an interview, newly minted Windows consumer marketing vice president Brad Brooks said that Microsoft had been testing lower prices over the past few months and was surprised to find that the amount of revenue lost was more than made up for by an increase in the number of PC buyers willing to shell out for an upgrade."

lol... no s__t sherlock!

so i guess ultimate will no longer be 499 at staples..  probably 399
(still way too high)

Now if they could get the box price down to OEM level for Ult (aprox 250) you might even see MORE upgrades..

...and if ms released a new windows every year or two like - apple - and got the retail box down to 99$ - people would upgrade in droves...

* i have never understood why i can buy ult for 250 with a cable - but its 500 staples

edit:  xp to vista = 6 years  /  ult costs = $500
    vs:  new windows every year - at 99$ x 6 years = $600
= $100 more over 6 year period - at lower price

Because you can only use the $250 version with that particular cable, and you don't get support.
Vista Ultimate retail is $700 here (nearest equivalent of newegg). It's around $330 in US (newegg). Knowing that EU is milking MS I can see the logic in this pricing. Personally though when I buy things, especially bits and bytes I compare the price globally and simply do not buy if there's more than 10% deviation after adjusting the price with income levels in the points of comparison. So at most it should cost ~ $360 for me to consider buying as income here isn't that much different to US compared to Asia for example. There's no limit to greed except when things don't sell the greedy bas*ards will have to see the light and drop the price. Big Smile
