Am I the only geek in the whole world who didn't play D & D?

Granted I played Warhammer 40k (Epic version, more fun than the regular one). But still, that's not D&D.

I've also never played Magic:The Gathering.

Remind me what I'm doing here again...?

(Also, 'tis sad, but folks die all the time, so I'm not going to be as sad as I was when Douglas Adams died for instance.)

Massif - I played magic, 40k (still do), wfb and various rpgs including but not limited to d&d, wfrp, the white wolf games (supernatural creature: the actioning), cyberpunk, cthulu.. I also larped. Its a miracle I never got hooked on WoW or the like. But arguably, none of those would have existed without Gygax.

Amen, brother. Been roleplaying for nearly 20 years now. Started with the original D&D red box and haven't looked back since.

Not surprisingly, Order of the Stick and Penny Arcade have already commemorated him.

EDIT: Oh, and regarding the Noun: The Verbing games, here's one from dear old Brunching Shuttlecocks:

What is Vampire: The Masquerade?
Vampire: The Masquerade is a storytelling game of personal horror.
What's a "storytelling game?"
A roleplaying game with a colon in the title.

I don't argue his influence, I just thought it was odd how many people played D&D. Whereas I never met anyone who admitted to it all the way through my education.

In fact, I've still never met anyone - in person - who admitted to playing it.

We have a real, live D&Der at our company -- and we've just hired one of his gaming mates as well.  That's two! Possibly a record.

I played Warhammer and Cthulhu instead. These days I don't have time.

Playing D&D this Friday. Will have to slaughter a town full of Kobolds in Gary's honour Cool

Don't think D&D is a geek thing. It's actually a nice way to get away from yourself, like acting. Lots of celebs play it, from Robin Williams, Stephen Colbert  to Vin Dielsel(he played with Dame Judi Densch during Riddick) [6]

I faded out of D&D after the 3.0 rules.. I enjoyed 2nd Ed greatly, and came across kenser co's Hackmaster... now that is truely a game of champions!  It captures the great feeling of 'back in the day' with just the right amount of tables and rules...

things go on as always
I played as a kid, and I think it was a really good background, because it got me into researching history and folklore, writing stories, drawing out campaigns on paper, and a lot of other things which helped shape my other interests.

As somebody older, I'm not going to spend my time trying to find geeks to play with, especially since most people don't really play well. Most DMs were either about hack-and-slash and did not create good campaigns, or completely about a gimmicky plot without interest in creating a real environment. Most players were just interested in leveling up or getting stuff. It's not really much different in MMORPGs these days. I have other ways to pool my creative interests.

As a former D&D nerd (wish I still had my blue box), I think it was a wonderful opportunity to engage your imagination. I had a group of friends that would get together on weekends with our Coke and chips and spend hours and hours getting lost in the world Gygax helped us create. The other table-top RPG that I was heavy into was Traveller, which was Sci-Fi based and also a lot of fun.

I'm sure my mother didn't know what she was getting into when she gave the game to me for Christmas all those years ago, but I have a lot of fond childhood memories associated with it. Unfortunately, I stopped playing when I started college, just didn't have the time.

Of course, more people are playing online games like WoW and whatnot, but they all owe a debt of gratitude to Gary.
