Unfortunately the download links don't work yet, but I'm guessing they will after the MIX08 keynote has been delivered in a few hours time.

I'm blogging from MIX08 over at http://www.dailydotnetshow.com and also hope to be on twitter (wireless permitting) as announcements are made (irascian account)

Can you install it and still have your IE7 instance?

I also hope when IE8 is finally out that that MultipleIE program gets IE7 in it Smiley

There is a "Emulate IE7" button in the toolbar. Smiley
A few sites broken, but only minor breaks (C9 editor for instance), looking good ..

Mainly good. The acid tests are still a bit off - ACID1 works perfectly, ACID2 has a random textbox but otherwise works and ACID3 gets 19/100.

Edit: Also the Emulate IE7 button requires you to close the page and reopen the browser, which is frankly unacceptable from a consumer point of view. They want to press the button and it to just switch the rendering agent in the current page, at most refreshing the page.

This release isn't targeted towards consumers though, is it? No doubt such a function will be buried away (if it exists at all in the final (or earlier) build(s).

Acid2 doesn't get a random textbox for me. It's exactly like the reference image.

They mentioned in the keynote that the emulate button was for this beta only.

Well I just took the risk to install & restart ..probably a good thing MS only updates its software once in a blue moon.. damn if every software company required you to restart your pc for every update I don't think i'd ever get much work done!!!!

anyway good to see IE8 UI hasn't changed one iota.. same old ugly graphics and layout, with tabs that have those little white pixel corners... -sloppy... I guess in all those months since IE7 came out no one botherd to get the graphics editor out.

oh look that autoscroll button still looks like crap.. jeesh guys I know its just a beta.. but this isn't a good sign Perplexed

anyway closed IE8 browser and opened up a decent browser to use.. yup Maxthon 1 & 2 +plugins both using the IE8 engine worked just fine without any update.. I suppose this is all that really matters as I can't be arsed to actually test out the IE8 browser. From what I saw on its features list.. it looked like it was just putting in the bare minimum to catch to other browsers.. and even then it didn't seem like it was really aiming at better anything else out there already.

good things is that IE8 renders pages notably much faster than it used to .. transparent layerd .png files covering a page etc could kill IE7, actually testing some of blizzards sites(starcraft2, wow forums etc... ( a company that I am sure sets out to design there sites to make IE users wonder why there junky browser is soo slow) IE8 has put right now, and its seems much better. Of course if running into pages that don't render properly in IE8 is going to be a common occurence then I'm pretty sure no one is going to stay too impressed with what should have been put right years back!

Yes I agree with that. kinda stupid and annoying to expect users to have to restart the browser. I did try test that "IE7 emulate" after coming across a page that didn't render properly..( imageshack) turns out it didn't even render properly in the IE7 emulate on either, and that was after restarting the IE8 browser.. pah.. ridiculous

I'm trying it out in a VM right now.

It seems like no, but it does have that "Emulate IE 7" button.
I'm not going to install this on my main machine though.

The post entry textbox doesn't look right in IE 8.

Yeah, that only works in IE7 emulation mode. Hopefully, that'll get fixed soon.

And while they're fixing it, they should fix Safari and Opera too (or just remove the stupid browser detection code altogether).
It's pretty cool stuff, but like it says its just for web development use, don't try using this for day-to-day browsing.

OK. The official one works perfectly, but another link (#4 on google for Acid2) breaks.

That's due to cross domain security checks. The IE team blogged about it here.

It's because you're viewing the test on a mirror.

EDIT: I should read the thread before posting Tongue Out
