I just went through Windows Update to get SP1. The Windows portion ran fine, I clicked "Restart Now", it went through two more shutdown parts, then rebooted. So far so good. Next it goes to the black screen with white text where I assume it is verifying files or something.

I get to:

!! 0xc0190002 !! 2340/123123 (cabview.dll)

and it hangs. According to the NTSTATUS page on MSDN, that error code is "STATUS_INVALID_TRANSACTION" which means "The transaction handle associated with this operation is invalid."

Google yields three results, two of which are in German.  I figured after XP SP2 deployments went relatively well and since the SP1 RC had been out so long there was nothing to worry about. I guess I learned my lesson. For what it's worth, this is with Vista Ultimate x64. Maybe Google will pick this up and someone will have an answer.

The icing on the cake is that I don't have my Vista disc with me and won't be able to get it until this weekend. Does anyone know if you can do a system restore after booting off the disc? It created a restore point before installing and I figure that's my best chance of getting back to normal without having to reinstall Vista.

Proving QQ for 5 years!

Wonder if it is a hard disk issue (e.g. Corruption, bad sectors etc)?

Always a possibility, but the hard drive was purchased in August 2007 and is a Seagate hard drive. I've been using Seagate hard drives for almost four years and have never had an issue. In fact, the other drive in the computer is a 3+ year old Seagate 160GB drive.

if you have an 680i or other newer/older nvidia chipset you can bet it's not the HDD Big Smile

ASUS P5K. I'm using the Intel ICH9 hardware (not JMicron) for the hard drive connectivity.

then it could be some annoying driver/software that blocks the update. the vista install dvd can use restore points so you could be able to get vista working again without reinstalling over the previous install

by the way you're not the only one having problems with Vista SP1. I installed the RTM on a few PCs and on all of them there were broken drivers, broken applications or the install didn't complete at all (BSOD/rolled back). it seems to break even more things than XP SP2 did when it came out.
Slackware can fix that, lickety split.

If you want the glitz, Ubuntu.

Youre not actually gonna use that Vista sh*t are ya?

Well I managed to get a stripped down restore disc instead and although it locates my Vista install, it says the versions are not compatible. I guess even though SP1 hasn't installed completely, it's managed to muck up enough stuff in the process. Any ideas?

EDIT: And for what it's worth, has anyone else seen this white text on black background file "check" process?

try downloading a vista sp1 install dvd and restoring from it

I have just had a similair problem
  1. Before bed, flatten hard drive and re-install Vista
  2. Install skeleton software like Visual Studio and Firefox
  3. Start SP1, since you cannot intefere with the installation, get a good book and tuck up in bed
  4. A little while later, check the installation progress, screen is stuck on the 'windows is loading' startup screen with the green marqee progress bar frozen
  5. Be patient, leave it a little while
  6. Return, still frozen - right switch the PC off and "tiddly-winks"
  7. Early this morning, PC will not boot, stuck on green marquee (this blinks 13 times then freezes)
  8. Safer mode wont start as that freezes as well
  9. Starting with 'last known good confirguration' does not start as that also freezes
  10. Go to Vista DVD and click repair, freezes
  11. Be patient and try again, freezez again
  12. OK shall I re-install vista as it's only a 15-20 minute install? Decide now try again!
  13. On the third attempt at repairing, the system allows a system restore, and the blue marquee progress bar does not freeze
  14. Log onto PC, start Firefox and alert this thread. Basically PC is back to being without SP1, a bit of a nightmare if this is a common problem but we'll have to wait and see.
  15. I was running Vista SP1 RC1 for months and that installed without any problems and fixed a few ills. Maybe it's a 'vanilla install' - as you guys put it, but we'll have to await the trends and patterns to deduce whether or not this is the case.
  16. Off out now, see you in a bit.
