Irascian put me onto this site (through the DailyDotNetShow) which appears to be Soapbox but re-branded.

Is Soapbox doing so badly that there is an attempt to re-brand it? Why is the branding not 'Live'? If it is an educational resource, why is it not in one of the (far too many) marketing sites such as C8/9/10?

Na, just looks like a central site for all microsoft produced video assets to me.

Some (but not much) background information on the new video site here

I think this is more about consolidating internal videos. At the moment it's all over the place. C8/9/10 and then there are things like MIX University, WPF Boot Camp, Firestarter, Webcasts etc etc.

It all gets very confusing very quickly. Especially when you can remember seeing something good but can't remember where you saw it!

At MIX08 I got the sense that there is a lot of internal competition within Microsoft for video (I may be over-reacting to a comment or two from different Microsofties), plus of course you have individual bloggers doing their own screencasts on their blogs, on top of stuff like dotnetvideos.net and the official "How do I" asp.net screencasts - just trying to keep track of all the URLS for these "learning resource videos" is horrific.

Just to clarify this, Live is the separate branding for tools and service that augment Windows.

Content is available via MSN, while this site looks like an horizontal consolidation of video assets.

Live == Services && MSN == Content.
Right.
Got it.

Does anyone else know about this? Would it be worth telling them?

I honestly have no idea why this isn't more widely known. I knew about the difference before joining Microsoft, but I guess people just don't care...

Actually, I have an idea about this, and it's not a particularly nice thought for our marketing Smiley

I see what you've done here, and I'll fight back with a classic move:

Maybe it is based on silverlight. And just like everyone else said, it seems like a MS internal video website. It looks very technical from that tiny screenshot.

A single feed to get updates across all of the windows sites would be useful - especially if it lets me specify my interests and get a personalised feed.  I'm not holding my breath though.

FYI, that's where we're going with 'Microsoft Communities'.  It's basically an aggregate data store of our stuff, ASP.NET, IIS.NET, Silverlight.NET, etc.  We're working on APIs so you all (and anybody else for that matter) can write apps against all this data.  Our Microsoft Communities Facebook application is the first "app" written against all this data.  The Community Bar across the top of all our sites is also using that data.

We're not limited to just video either.  Smiley
