I just had to perform a reinstall of WindowsXP (expect a rant about a bad install experience when I get round to it - though I blame the OEM) and was pleasntly suprised at some of the stuff going on on Windows Update.

The first was that Silverlight 1.0 was being pushed out. This is a great way to spread it to the masses. The next step is to make it high priority so that it gets pushed out via Automatic Update.

The second was in among all the Windows security updates was an Adobe update for Flash Player. It's great to see microsoft beging to push third party software (not hardware) updates out over Windows update - something I've seen asked for many times here. Big Smile

And I'd got my hopes up too Sad
I have checked this on several machines.  Silverlight is not installed on any machine, if it is not already installed.  Flash was updated, because the flash player included in the OS had a security problem

Under "Software - optional".

Definatley wasn't installed on this machine before because it is a clean install.
Just checked on a clean machine, had to install XP for testing.  In the Microsoft Update Page, there was no Silverlight option at all.  I then installed Silverlight, then the option became available
I definitely got Silverlight 1.0 as an optional update.
I have it too without ever having installed it
Now there's the difference with Apple Update: in Microsoft Update, it's an optional update that you have to select manually if you want it. It's not selected by default.
