Though I do agree.. there should be a solution for family integrations of calendars, contacts, and tasks

The protocol for Sharepoint is documented; see http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/spptsdk/html/tsstsync.asp

A sample application is at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/odc_ol2003_ta/html/odc_OLOutlookCalendar.asp

I agree that this is a space and a problem set just WAITING for someone to solve it. I have personally watched this very closely as I believe there is a lot of potential here. I thought that Apple was going to nail it with iCal but have since faded in my optimism there. I disagree with the notion of giving users yet another complex server offering to solve a relatively simple problem. P2P is the way to go here. Groove Networks has both integration with Outlook and sync'd P2P Calendar, Contacts, etc. I have been a Groove user for years. Second, keep an eye on what Mitch Kapor and the OSAF is doing with Chandler. These guys have a ways to go still towards shipping a commerical grade product, but ultimately this is his goal, Outlook like functionality without the servers all done P2P.
Whatever happened to Hailstorm, which was supposed to address this issue?  Sigh.
Why couldn't Outlook be modified to have a global .pst.

Say that I have a work contact and all his particulars. I create a contact and designate it as 'My contact'. It stays local to my profile and no one else has the information.

Fast forward two weeks and now my wife and I go to dinner with this contact and his wife. The wives become friends and want to communicate. I go home and change the designation of the contact to global. It now moves into the global contacts and everyone has access to it (with a note of who added it).

It would be an all or nothing affair where the contact is either seen by all or only the user who creates it.

The global would load first and then the local info with outlook flagging any duplicate entries in either calender or contacts thatr show up locally.

I run a multi user home PC with Office on it and use outlook as my client. Trying to get the wife to come over as well and since she keeps in touch much better than I do, it would be wonderful for her to manage contact information for both of us with out me having her forward the emails so I can save the address.

<I'm not 100% up on Outlook's hows and whys so if this makes no sense please disregard or feel free to enlighten me>

Me, up a mountain!

I have to say that after installing Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition, there were some rather undesired effects!

Good things:
Exchange with the POP3 connector is amazing. I now use PDAs, laptops and even the Media Center to check my emails depending on where I am in the house.

The ability to put reminders in to both my calendar and that of my wife's is also awesome. I know a lot of people think it sad that you have to send your own partner an invitation, but with us both working it really saves us hassle.

Now we have an internal address book where we keep all our friends addresses, etc. with their birthdays, etc. This is also excellent.

The use of personal folders mapped to a network drive is a real life saver, especially when using multiple computers around the house. My USB memory stick is almost redundant!

Your MP3 collection and playlists, which ever machine you use!

Best of all is the backup utility. All the mailboxes, profiles, mp3s, etc. are backed up nightly to an external disk system over the network!

Bad things:
After installing the PDF iFilter for WSS my wife discovered that all her recipies [mixture of text files, word docs and pdf files] are suddenly indexed for easy searching. My main servers disk space has disappeared! Over a 100 gig of RAID 5 gone!

Things I would like to see in any newer versions for the house and home would have to be VOIP, MSN Messengener integration, central virus protection for all attached appliances and a licensing pack for home users. I think that 5 users would be great, but also include 5 XP Pro licenses. It would be a sure way that homes could cut down on virus infections, etc.
