So I built this site over the weekend which allows people to request/share Live Mesh invites.

About 7 hours work.

Share Live Mesh

It finds lightbulbs.
I'd love an invite, but I'm not sure if I'd like my email adress displayed on a public website like that. What's to stop someone from harvesting all of those? Or does it just display the name you entered and not the actual name-part of the email address?

Edit: yeah, no, it displays the actual email address. So I guess I'll pass. Wouldn't it be better if it just didn't display the email address at all and kept those addresses server-side? Some sort of thing where people send the invite to your website, which then passes it on?

Then how will people send you invites?

I edited my post, but apparently too late. Tongue Out

Does it need to be the actual email address for the Live ID that you'll sign up with? Because if not, then I could just use some random gmail address I have lying around.

My name has 9 letters. Coincidence? I think not...
And this works for people not in the US?

No it does not, but it's recommended to make the process more streamlined.

You could use a random gmail address if you want.

Cool, I'll give it a shot then. Thanks!

Got the desktop client to work too http://www.istartedsomething.com/20080427/install-mesh-client-non-us-systems/

This begs the questions: why wasn't it simply released for testing worldwide in the first place, if it all works after all? Less stress on the US datacenter?

I wonder how long it takes until Microsoft takes Long's site down... *counting*

You do have to wonder about an installer that doesn't work under UAC and software that requires a particular regional setting. It kind of smacks of amateurism.

blowdart,

there's a reason why its explained in the Mesh read me under "Known Issues". Its still a tech preview (beta), and betas often have known issues that have yet to be addressed.

Beta is not an excuse. Security should be there from the ground up. UAC is supposed to be there to protect users; causing people to jump through hoops and not working with it is pretty damned shoddy.

I misread what you wrote. I have UAC on, and the installer worked perfectly. From things I've read, I gathered it doesn't work when UAC is off, and thats what i thought you said.

Technically, you got it backward.

"Mesh" won't install if you have UAC turned off.

So, instead of lack of protection, it's too much protection.

Well kind of. It won't install via UAC elevation; instead you need to login as a full blown administrator.

By the way, I can't view a Mesh folder on the web by media, because since I''ve installed SP1 Silverlight for me has stopped working in IE8. Has anyone else had this problem?

Since SP1 I've also had issues with some sidebar gadgets that worked fine before.

To enable the Live Mesh Remote Desktop enhancements, you must be logged on to Windows Vista using an administrator account. To log on with an administrator account:

  1. Click Start, and then click the arrow next to the lock button.
  2. Click Switch User, then select a user with administrator permissions and enter the password for that account.
