Live Messenger, jackin' with my sound levels

I use msn messenger on numerous computers in my house, but when I use it in the bedroom it always has some issue with the sound. It cause the audio to fade in and out. It will go from high, down to low, and then back to high. I thought it may have just been the video I was watching, so I ran over to YouTube, and had the same problem. I paused the video, turned off msn messenger, and went back to the video, and all was well.

Anybody know what the friggin' heck is going on with this P.O.S?

I had the same issue.

But mine was only during Video Conferences and only with a Creative X-Fi soundcard.

It would cause the system's master volume to drop to 25% each time any input was received on the microphone.

So for example I'd type too loud on the keyboard, the mic would pick it up, and suddenly my music had dropped to 25% volume.

I "solved" it by removing my Creative card literally throwing it against the wall and using the built in audio.

PS - Original thread here. I might have been somewhat annoyed when I wrote that considering it was my second creative card with issues.

Hmm...

Does the machine run Vista? Do you have the latest sound drivers? Perhaps get the latest manufacturer drivers rather than the default ones included in Vista?

Vista has independent volume controls for individual apps like PulseAudio in Linux. Could the volume level for MSN Messenger be the culprit?

What happens when you try a different client, such as aMSN or Trillian?

Manip brought up another good point. I failed to mention that this only happens when I'm in a video conference. My apologies. I'll check the sound drivers - yes, this machine is running vista business.

So don't buy Nvidia and Creative if your a Vista user...that's what I've learned so far.

Stick to ATI and Turtle beach?

I'm going to guess that this is by design--  Messenger is automatically lowering the sound level to prevent feedback or echoing.
