I want my waffle sundae, give me my carbs!
I really have trouble finding my 'happy place' when Windows decides to reboot due to updates and toss out what I've been working on. It thinks it knows better than me, such arrogance.

if( !succeed( try() ) ) { while(true) try(); }
Then turn off Windows Updates, or set it to install the updates at 3AM or something.

Also Windows does give you a bit of warning - the reason it turns reboots by itself derives from the fact that people don't turn their computers off at the end of the day, whereas in Windows 2000's time (remember "It is now safe to turn off your computer"?) people used to turn if off at the end of the day.

You can change this via Group Policy IIRC.

Or via the Windows Update window accessible via the Control Panel, or by clicking on the updating icon.

Not quite 100% on this one but I'm pretty sure I've seen some games being so exclusively on top/full screen or whatever that if you are playing them during those warnings and at the time when it's going to reboot, there will be no user visible warning.

In front of my computer....

What I do is allow automatic updates to download the updates, then tell me that they're there, so I can make sure I save my work and stuff, and make a backup before installing them.  That way, I don't lose anything.

Group Policy gives you access to the "No auto reboot with logged on users" setting, which is not exposed via the UI.
