i like these new features. just hope at least the screen cap part makes it.
but i keep thinking how many people will sue to prevent these features from making it so they can keep their add-ons selling.
wow - that goes by so fast it is hard to tell whats what.

i think i liked the first thing  ;P

edit - no the second thing - ftp locations.  so i can just have my ftp sites in My Computer.

i liked that
My only hope now is a fast IMAP client. Outlook and Windows Mail are so freaking slow with IMAP.

It is hard to wait.

I had sent this around earlier today to see if it was real...it's fake.

That being said, the Web tools around a minute in was the part that interested me the most...

I'd imagine that would be fair bit of work to make a fake like that .

explorer with tabs... my word!, and ok splitscreen layout, a decent enough screencapture tool finally built in...

And if thats not the kind of progress we will be seeing in windows 7 then its probably a good thing you sent it around campus

You call that progress? Expressionless

Yup, that was nice Smiley
I don't think its progress, but some of those things wouldn't be bad to think about.

We had another thread about how because Microsoft has been focusing on the big picture its put less attention on small details like utilities that come with the OS.

Those are just new applets, gadgets and add-ons, bundled with the OS.  And the ones shown there are not that revolutianaries, something anyone can port to XP (even Win2k)

What I really like to see in Win7 is (compared to Vista/XP, I use VIsta every day and think is great) more componentized a very small NT kernel (something I think MS is trying to do already) without all the fat of the upper layers.   And a more "on-demand" approach to the over all system.

For instance there are at least 5 services running by default involved in having a map of my current network which is something I couldn't careless most of the time... That should be an applet NOT a bunch of services... Network List present in Win2K, XP and Vista mantains my connections updated... I mean what? that should be an API on Win32 getting that list from the installed network drivers or from the IP stack... explorer should consult a list from there.  Or the Shell Hardware Detection... whose whole purpose is to trigger the little windows askin' what to do when you insert a new drive (USB/CD/DVD) again... what? there is something called File System Watchers and Explorer should use those to detect a new drive and show the proper dialog it doesn't requeres a service sitting there doing nothing must of the time.

Or for example a little optimization on windows search... not being so chatty on the HD or not using 40MB of RAM (recently I got involved on small project to index sparce info on several files it was made with C# 2.0 , using SQL Server CE, and it uses 3.5MB and is veeery responsive)

well, just my 2 cents.  On whats more important for windows

Umm...wasn't this feature introduced in Windows 98SE?  I know I've been using it since at least Windows 2000.   In Vista, they moved it to "Computer" and got rid of the "My Network Places", but FTP sites integrated into Explorer has been there for as long as I remember.

Well.. Do you call XP to Vista really much progress?  Cool   I certainly ain't missing it.

I'll guess we'll just have to see what was actually done with win7 whether its better or worse than that 'fake' video... i'd hope it would better features, more of an improvement in the UI layout department and a better skin theme.

Why must you ruin their fun?
You guys are really gullible. Tongue Out

I know just a little about this video. The product shown there is called "Extensions for Windows" so it's not really a fake, but positioning it as part of Windows 7 features might be fake. It currently exists only as private Beta for Win XP & Vista.
If anyone's interested in seeing it please contact me and I'll forward your request to the source.

Well, there's at least one feature in those "extensions" that isn't an extension at all, but has been a feature of Windows for over a decade, so I have to question the veracity of this even as a beta for a set of extensions.

Whatever. I think that this topic can be closed now.

WLM is just OE dressed up with a UI that doesn't respect system color settings.

So this video's a fake?

You know, it is faster, but it isn't near thunderbird. Ideally, I would like to use Windows Live Mail, and maybe even outlook, but the performance is horrible and I see errors.

Since switching to thunderbird, as someone had suggested to me, the errors have gone away and the performance is great.

I should note with outlook I get no errors, just slow performance. I really wonder if the dev gteams actually use IMAP at all, because I swear they would be embarassed.

I outlined this with this post

Well, when I switch from the Mail Tab to the newsgroup tab, sometimes it will freeze, and say that the server isn't responding. When I check my gmail account, it alwys comes up with an [Gmail] folder error. Thunderbird I don't expirence these things, but Live Mail looks so much better. It just errors and complains more.

I also find coming back from sleep using imap and having Live Mail open can sometimes cause it to go white and claim "Not Responding".

Here is what happend just now.

Unable to send or receive messages for the Gmail (x) account. Your 'Deleted Items' folder was not polled for its unread count.

Server Response: Your IMAP command could not be sent to the server, due to non-network errors. This could, for example, indicate a lack of memory on your system.
Server: 'imap.gmail.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x8004108D
Protocol: IMAP
Port: 993
Secure(SSL): Yes

Unable to send or receive messages for the Hotmail (x) account.

Server Response: An error has occurred.
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x8004108D
Protocol: NNTP
Port: 0
Secure(SSL): No

Unable to send or receive messages for the Osu (x) account. Your 'Inbox' folder was not polled for its unread count.

Server Response: Your IMAP command could not be sent to the server, due to non-network errors. This could, for example, indicate a lack of memory on your system.
Server: 'imap.service.ohio-state.edu'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x8004108D
Protocol: IMAP
Port: 993
Secure(SSL): Yes

There were 29 of these.

Someone should fix this.

1) It respects my settings; I very much like the new color schemes
2) As stated
