Can't keep a good man down ...

Shrugging off comments that he's 'sold out' to Microsoft, Negroponte has unveiled version 2 of his OLPC project.

It has dual screens (the lower one being multi-touch) and will go for the totally unbelievable price of $75. I imagine that will be '$75' in the same way that the original OLPC sold for 'below $100'.

More details at Engadget.

Apparently all OLPCs now come with a Gucci(r) brand carrying case and Windows Vista Ultimate.

There is no way this device will be $75 in 2010.

The cost of oil in 2010 will easily keep the manufactoring and shipping of these laptops beyond the target price point.

Additionally, the value of U.S. currency will have likely declined further by 2010.

If you stumbled and fell down, it doesn't mean yet, that you're going in the wrong direction.
I like design and concept... But "OLPC"? "Per Child"? Maybe "Per Child Having Very Rich Parents"? "OLPCHVRP"? Tongue Out

It finds lightbulbs.

Using that multitouch screen as a keyboard sounds like a nightmare. I hope they'll consider creating educational software geared towards this device as much as possible, requiring little to no text input.

Oh no. See, the iPhone proved beyond any doubt that people are super happy to type essays and letters without tactile feedback. They just love it!

Considering that the sound recorder app on the original XO is just frightening (I mean, I worked in a recording studio in my youth, but we never used *oscilloscope-like displays* to sample stuff...), I wouldn't have too much faith in software that is actually usable by the target audience.

Surely sorting out the supply problems, the reliability problems and the billing problems they have right now would be a better use of time?

Oh no, I forget, it wasn't really about helping the 3rd world now was it?
