Today we shipped Windows Search 4.0! Here are some details from my blog post:
Windows Search 4.0 was released this afternoon. This release focuses on performance and reliability improvements. Here are some highlights:

  • Faster queries, often several times faster
  • Faster indexing / reduced resource usage
  • Support for EFS (encrypted folders)
  • Support for indexing delegate mailboxes
  • Fixes for all the top reported Watson crashes / errors
  • New group policy options
This release also adds the following Vista / Server 2008 features to Windows XP / Server 2003 systems:

  • Remote query support (using the server's indexed when querying a network share)
  • Support for Vista-style preview handlers (Office 2007 documents, etc)

The KB article includes download links for all support platforms.

I think I'll give it a try...  hopefully it doesn't suck as much on XP as 3 did (it made my whole computer run a lot more slowly).
This is wonderful news, I love the new speed and improved resource management.

One has to wonder though, after making things quick, less resource intensive, what can 4.0+ bring? Any tidbits on the future Wink

It is much faster, just installed it on Vista SP1, rebooted and tested, Awesome results.

Will this be available via Windows Update?

Not bad.  Much more usable on XP than the previous version--  now it doesn't slow down startup, and indexing is quite a bit faster, too.

I just wish the XP version put shortcuts at the top of the deskbar results list...  that would be really helpful (but would possibly take away one reason to upgrade to vista Wink )
They should force install this on everyone's PCs it is too good not to have, at least for Vista.

That's sort of my reason for asking. Should I start telling people to install this, or will they get it automatically through WU eventually?
I put it in my messenger status message for people to install. It isn't up on WU yet...

Uh-oh. Installed it and outlook complains about an incompatible GDIPLUS then shuts down.

Edit: Not doing it a second time. Weird. Oh well!

Does the package come with the 2007 iFilters, or do I need to install them separately? And out of interest how do I query remote indexes? Just add the UNC path for the WHS devices to the laptop? (After the WHS index rebuild finishes of course!)
It used to have a "Programs" group which displayed you Start Menu shortcuts at the top like very other desktop search app for XP, but after version 2.6.5 they removed it for some reason.

When the 4.0 preview came out I responded on the search blog about this, was told it was being reported - very dissapointed to not see it fixed, it really forces me to use Google as the majority of the time I use desktop search apps as quick program launchers.

Grrr.....

Let's wait until patch Tuesday next week.
Yes I've used Launchy, but the point is it shouldn't be needed - it's perfectly good functionality that they removed without explanation.

suddenly I feel less inclined to even bother with it.. already had one nightmare of * storm crap experience and then the hassle of trying to remove 'Live onecare' off a pc this week.. which took longer to remove than trojan(vundo) itself which I might add was removed with spyware docter and not even onecare.. so don't think i'll be bothering with MS stuff for a while.

Live Onecare = rubbish

It looks like a one off; hasn't happened again at all.

And yea, OneCare has a bad reputation. Mind you, not as bad as Norton.
Someone else had mentioned it was worth trying because it had removed a varient Vundo trojan.. I had already removed the trojan with said program(spyware doc), and manualy taking out the rest of the junk I had spotted myself.. so thought giving onecare a go just to see if it coudl find anything else was second thought.. but I shoudl have known from the start just looking at the website it was gonna be junk..

I mean the setup file starts download its sh/t through the installer, I can't stand that crap, woudl rather download the full standalone install package no matter how big it is and pick up updates later if tehy dont' update there standalone installers.. but I get  some crumy 1mb~ installer that needs to download more upon installation... and it took bloody ages then while I had started using this machine doing other things when the setup finally had finished downloading it just proceeded to restart the PC.. I mean I was literally doing my own work on that pc when applications started shutting down... no warning nothing.. utter *.. then after it had restarted the PC nothing else loaded up included the IE browser engine.. had complety borked things up with its crap firewal.. and trying to uninstall it from safe mode.. since when did uninstallers stop working from within safe mode.. completly retarded..  probably had something to do with the fact it needed to contact its website to ask if I was allowed to remove it Perplexed .. seriously * installers/uninstallers MS are using for Live products..  had already noticed it with live mail.. which I have right mind to remove right now off this pc seeing as it barely gets used for anything i'm beginning to get sick of Live products that just aren't very good at all! but could leave that for another discussion.

I think there is a problem with this update, I've now installed it on three machine, all Vista x64 sp1 + office 2007 sp1 and all of them come up with the error 'outlook data file did not close properly' when starting outlook, every time.  The thrid machine was a test, no problem before and problem turns up stright after.  These all had pre-defined outlook profiles against exchange servers.
I'm getting some weird errors now. As a note, I do have my hard drives set to turn off after one hour, I think that is the default Vista setting, and they do wake properly, I can read them now... Could it be WDS doesn't wake my drives or what?
