I just though of this and posted it in the IE video thread, but I will repost it here so more people will see it and give their opinion on it.

Would it be a good feature to implement Web Slices for individual C9 threads, so that using IE8 you could monitor the progress of a fast moving thread without actually being on the C9 site?

It finds lightbulbs.
I think that's a great idea.

I'd be shocked it this wasn't already in Erik's head. Wink

It was in my head already, but it was actually in Duncan's head first.  Wink  I believe Duncan said he didn't want to implement it yet because it might not be 100% baked yet and we don't want to keep changing it.  We will definitely do this at some point though.

Definitely a good idea and glad you brought it up.  Agreed it would be cool if it "just lit up".  We were contacted about putting in the meta tag that tells IE 8 to run as IE 7 a week before Mix (when the IE 8 beta came out).  I'd imagine we'll be contacted again before the next release and will implement some web slices.  It's a great feature!

We actually had web slices on the home page of 'C9 Classic', and no one seemed to even notice them Smiley

There are issue with web slices, unless they've changed since I last looked at them, in that they don't support javascript. This isn't a big deal, but in many cases it would mean that I can't implement them the easy way by just marking an area of the page as a slice. Instead, we'd have to create seperate code just for the web slice, and quickly the 'easy' has gone away. I honestly never thought of them on a per thread basis though, since that would seem to me to require you to add/remove slices all the time, a 'threads I've recently viewed' slice that covered all new activity on threads you've recently visited would seem more useful, since it would stay useful from day to day and you wouldn't end up with 3 or 4 of them on your toolbar.

Keep sending your ideas though, I do want us to implement slices... so lets figure out the best content to put into them!
Maybe because IE8 Beta 1 hasn't had penetration? Even for a developer it was kind of an annoying build...
